Glass bonding and sealing mastic, in an 80 or 310 ml cartridge

The JBL AquaSil aquarium silicone is used to build a glass tank, to reseal a glued tank or to fix a decoration. It comes in an 80 ml plunger cartridge or a 310 ml cartridge for a sealant gun, in black or clear. It forms a skin in 10 minutes, then cures 2 to 3 mm per 24 hours.

JBL AquaSil is a special aquarium silicone: it is used to assemble a frameless glass tank, to reseal an aquarium bonded with silicone and to fix a decoration, a rock or an aquarium root. It bonds strongly to glass, forms an elastic seal and becomes odourless and non-toxic once cured, so you can use it in a tank that houses fish and plants.

Sanitary sealants sold for shower joints often contain fungicides, intended to prevent mould, and these additives have no place in the water of a tank. AquaSil is a one-component silicone rubber that cures on contact with the moisture in the air, and its use for building glass aquariums is certified by TÜV Rheinland. It comes in black and in clear, in an 80 or 310 ml cartridge.

🕰️ Curing and filling with water

The silicone forms a skin on the surface after about 10 minutes, then cures through its depth at a rate of 2 to 3 mm per 24 hours. A bead 6 mm thick therefore needs 2 to 3 days before it is fully cured. During curing, the silicone releases a little acetic acid, hence its vinegar smell. Before the first filling, rinse the tank with clear, lukewarm water to remove these residues.

The tray fills once it has fully cured

A sealant bead that has skinned over on the surface is not yet hard right through, and filling too quickly makes it give way under the pressure of the water. Allow at least 24 hours for every 2 to 3 mm of bead thickness.

🧴 Two sizes, two jobs

The 80 ml cartridge comes with a plunger that you push by hand: it suits repairing a seal, bonding a decoration or fitting a glass divider. The 310 ml cartridge fits in a caulking gun and covers building a tank or redoing all of its seals in one go. In both cases, you cut the tip of the cartridge with a sharp knife, screw on the nozzle, then trim it again to the diameter of bead you want.

An underwater adhesive and a grease for the seals

To fix a decoration without emptying the tank, an underwater-setting adhesive does what silicone cannot, since silicone needs dry surfaces. For moving parts, such as the O-rings of a pump or a filter, a seal grease is what you need, not a sealant.

⚫ Black or transparent

Clear disappears on a pane of glass, but it shows up the slightest flaw in the bead. Black hides irregularities, emphasises the edges and gives a tank the look of a shop-bought aquarium. In both cases, application follows the same rules: dry, clean surfaces degreased with acetone, masking tape on either side, the bead laid in a single pass, smoothed immediately, and the tape removed before a skin forms. Preferably work at room temperature, since application is possible between 5 and 40 °C.

📦 Contents and seal durability

You receive an AquaSil silicone cartridge, in the size and colour you have chosen, with its dosing nozzle; the 80 ml cartridge is supplied with its piston. Once cured, the silicone withstands temperatures from -40 to +180 °C and stretches by about 575% before breaking, which allows it to absorb the slight movements of a water-filled tank.
