An O-ring does its job as long as it stays supple. Once it hardens, it no longer returns to its shape after being compressed, and it lets through a trickle of water or, more often, a trickle of air. Grease the deep grooves with a silicone spray

🔩 How to refit it

The sequence is always the same. Remove the seal, rinse it in clean water, clean its groove where limescale and debris build up, then run a dab of petroleum jelly with your finger around the whole circumference before refitting it. The seal goes back into place without twisting, the lid closes without force, and the next dismantling will not need a tool.
