This graduated measuring jug in translucent plastic measures water and nutrient solutions, with a pouring spout and a handle. In aquaponics, it lets you monitor evaporation, measure out a fertiliser or pH corrector, and check your pump's flow rate. Available in 500 ml, 1 L, 2 L and 5 L.
The summary
- What you receive: a graduated translucent plastic measuring jug, in the capacity of your choice, from 500 ml to 5 L.
- Which capacity: 500 ml or 1 L for diluting a product, 2 L or 5 L for measuring water.
- Its uses: monitoring evaporation, measuring out a fertiliser or a pH corrector, checking the flow rate of the pump.
- Cleaning: a rinse with clean water between products, by hand.
Translucent measuring jug with spout and handle, from 500 ml to 5 L
This graduated measuring jug in translucent plastic measures water and nutrient solutions precisely, with no need for scales. Its pouring spout guides the flow, and its handle is moulded as one piece with the body so you can hold it full with one hand. Read the graduation with the jug sitting flat on a surface, at eye level, in 500 ml, 1 L, 2 L or 5 L.
📏 Four sizes, four uses
500 ml
Graduated every 50 ml, the smallest format is ideal for diluting a pH corrector or a fertiliser for a small tank.
1 L
The 1 L bottle retains the 50 ml graduation line and is used to prepare the dilution for a large reservoir.
2 L
The 2 L jug, graduated every 100 ml, measures top-up water for a pot, a small tower unit, or an aquarium.
5 L
The 5 L version adds a half-litre scale and fills a large reservoir in fewer pours.
🐟 Its uses in aquaponics
In an aquaponic system, the measuring jug is used to pour the water, and above all to measure what goes into the circuit and what comes out of it. All of these actions rest on the same idea, because fish tolerate a sudden change in water quality poorly: by knowing the volumes, you correct in small steps instead of dosing by guesswork.
Evaporation
A mark set at the full level of the tank and the top-up water counted in glasses give you the volume lost each week.
Fertilisers and pH correctors
The product is diluted in a measured volume of water, then poured slowly into the tank where circulation is greatest.
Water change
The 5 L jug measures the replacement water, and therefore the corresponding dose of water conditioner, litre by litre.
Pump flow rate
Time how long it takes to fill a 5 L jug at the pipe outlet: if it fills in 10 seconds, the pump is delivering 1,800 L/h.
Check the pH in the glass before pouring
A solution prepared in the jug can be checked before it joins your reservoir. Draw off a few millilitres: the drop-based pH test for nutrient water gives you the value by colour. You can then correct a few litres rather than the entire circuit, using a corrector dosed more precisely.
Each concentrate is poured into the water
Never mix two concentrates directly in the glass, for example a fertiliser and a pH corrector. Fill the glass with water, pour in one product, stir, then add the next. A glass that has been used for these products is then kept for the garden only and does not go back to the kitchen.
💧 Monitor evaporation every week
Through evaporation and plant transpiration, the water level in a tank drops faster the hotter it gets. Stick a piece of tape at the full mark, then, once a week, top up with water to that line, counting the glasses you pour in. The volume you note down tells you how much your system really uses, and a sudden rise without a heatwave usually points to a leak or an overflow. Add this top-up water slowly, either left to stand or treated beforehand, so that its temperature and chlorine do not shock your fish.
🧪 Measuring out a fertiliser or a corrector
To prepare a nutrient solution, fill the container with water up to the line you want, then add the dose shown on the label of your hydroponic fertiliser, multiplied by the number of litres. At 2 ml per litre, a 5 L container therefore receives 10 ml, a small dose that is measured with a graduated syringe or the dosing cap. In aquaponics, the same method is used for supplements that the fish do not provide in sufficient quantity, such as iron, and for pH correctors. To correct the pH, dilute the product in a glass of water taken from the tank, then pour it in slowly, in several stages if necessary, so that the value changes gradually.
