The cascade hydroponic grow tower, in a 5, 7 or 11-tier version, holds 20, 28 or 44 plants, with 4 spaces per tier. A submersible pump carries the water to the top, from where it trickles down past the roots. It suits lettuces, baby leaves, herbs and strawberry plants, in cycles of 4 to 6 weeks.

A column, a reservoir at its base, and a submersible pump that carries the nutrient solution to the top. From there, the water trickles down from tier to tier past the roots, then falls back into the reservoir and sets off on another round. It is the simplest principle of vertical growing, and the one that needs the fewest adjustments: once the pump is plugged in, the circulation runs by itself, and each plant receives the solution as it passes.

🧩 Modules that fit together

Each tier holds four slots. You choose the height that suits your available space: 5 tiers and 20 plants for a corner of a balcony or kitchen, 7 tiers and 28 plants for a terrace, 11 tiers and 44 plants when height is no problem. The modules are identical from one version to the next and fit together without tools, which leaves you the option of adding more later. A pump that delivers above the top tier

On this column, the pump should be chosen first by its maximum head height, which must exceed that of the tower by at least 50 cm. The Syncra Silent submersible pump covers all three heights: the 1,350 L/h model lifts water up to 1.8 m for the 5-tier version, and the 2,700 L/h model up to 3 m for the 7- and 11-tier versions. Its front-mounted regulator then brings the flow down to what the column needs, so you keep water at the top without drowning the lower tiers. A daily timer runs it in cycles.

No potting compost or powdered fertiliser in the reservoir

Always dilute the fertiliser in a bucket before pouring it into the reservoir: poorly dissolved crystals precipitate and block the tier distributors. Do not put compost in the baskets, as it migrates with the water and clogs the circuit. And if you connect the tower to a fish pond, filter out the solids upstream of the pump, since this smooth plastic column has no filter mat to hold them back. The first sign of a blockage is a tier that stays dry while the others run freely.

🌿 What grows in a column

What does well in a column is short-cycle plants with fine roots, which fit in a basket a few centimetres across. The top of a column receives more light than the bottom, and the plants at the bottom stay smaller, because the upper tiers take part of their light. So place your lettuces, young shoots and basil at the top, and the parsley, chives and mint at the bottom, and at each transplanting move everything up one level, so that what has completed a cycle at the bottom moves up. Yield per square metre of floor stays far higher than with flat cultivation, since you stack up to 11 tiers on the footprint of one.

Salads and baby leaves

Lettuce, spinach, rocket and lamb's lettuce complete a cycle in 4 to 6 weeks, and you harvest the leaves as you go.

Herbs

Basil wants the top of the column; parsley, chives and mint are happy on the lower tiers.

Strawberry plants

The strawberry, a low-growing plant with fine roots, bears light fruit that sits comfortably in one of the column's baskets.

Root crops and large fruiting plants

Carrot, beetroot and large-fruited tomato fail, because the taproot hits the bottom of the basket or the plant acts as a lever and snaps.

🪨 Grow medium and power-cut margin

The grow medium gives you leeway if the pump fails. On an aeroponic tower, the roots are bare and a pump failure is measured in tens of minutes. Here, clay pebbles or coir hold water and the leeway is measured in hours, less in hot weather and with well-developed plants. The top tier dries out first, because it is also the most exposed. A quick daily look in summer is enough; a UPS is not necessary. The noise, for its part, does not come from the pump, which is submerged: it is the water falling back into the reservoir, a continuous splashing, audible in a bedroom. A timer that switches the pump off at night removes it, and a reservoir kept well filled shortens the drop height.

🌱 Seedling, transplanting and solution

Your plants are started separately, in rockwool cubes or germination sponges, then join the tower at the stage of 2 to 4 true leaves, which is 3 to 4 weeks after sowing for a lettuce or a herb. Sowing a new batch every 2 weeks lets you replace each harvested plant with one that is ready. In the reservoir, aim for a pH of 5.8 to 6.5, the range in which nutrients remain available, a conductivity of 0.8 to 1.4 mS/cm for leafy vegetables, and a solution below 22 °C, above which the roots deteriorate quickly in summer. A pH and conductivity tester gives you all three values in a single measurement.

🧽 Cleaning between two cycles

Between two crops, you take the tower apart module by module, which makes a complete clean possible. Empty the reservoir, rinse each module and the reservoir several times, until every smell has gone, and scrub the inside of the column where the roots have left deposits. Take out the pump to dismantle its strainer and impeller, which trap fragments of roots. A hard white deposit is limescale and dissolves in white vinegar. Finally, run your tower for an hour with clear water before preparing the new solution, which flushes out the last residues.

🐟 Connecting the tower to a pond

The tower can be connected to a fish pond, provided you do not simply place it at the water's edge. Filter the solids upstream: a kilo of feed given to the fish produces 250 to 300 g of solid matter, and the settling tank or pre-filter goes before the pump that feeds the tower, never after. Accept the pH compromise: you aim for 6.4 to 7.5 with fish, against 5.8 to 6.5 in pure hydroponics, and the compromise is made at the plants' expense, so that the bacteria and the fish stay in their comfort zone. Supplement the iron, which becomes poorly available at pH 7, with a DTPA or EDDHA chelate that is stable in this range. Increase the flow rate, which then sustains nitrification as well as wetting the roots. And stick to leafy vegetables: the water from a fish stock is rich in nitrogen and low in potassium.

Should you choose a single tower, a set of 3 or a set of 5?

These are exactly the same towers: the bundle changes neither the model, nor the assembly, nor the upkeep. What it changes is what you can harvest, and the price per tower.

Which pump do you need for this tower?

Two figures matter, and the second is the one people forget: the flow rate, and the head height. A pump rated at 800 L/h at free flow drops sharply at a height of 2 metres, and the water no longer reaches the top of the column.

The pump's maximum head height must exceed the height of the tower by at least 50 cm, which means 2.5 m for the 11-tier version, which stands about 1.95 m tall. The reason is physical: in a smooth plastic column nothing holds the water back, so the flow must be sufficient for every tier to be wetted before the water runs further down.

Which basket diameter should I order for the holes in the tower?

The basket is held by its lip, the upper rim: it must sit proud of the hole while the body passes through. The shop's slotted baskets come in 5 cm and 6.5 cm rim sizes.

On this tower, the order in which you buy avoids a costly mistake: 11 levels need 44 baskets, and a set of five towers up to 220. Start with the smallest pack, fit one on an assembled level, then equip the rest once the size is confirmed.

Does it work in a flat, or do you absolutely need a window?

Next to a well-lit window, yes. A lettuce needs around 11.5 to 12 moles of photons per square metre per day to form a proper head. A room that is bright in season, a conservatory or a south-facing sill will come close to this or reach it from April to September.

In a dark room, no. A normally lit interior tops out at around 1 to 3 moles per day, and winter light behind a picture window falls far short of what is needed. You will harvest leggy herbs, not salads. This tower has no lighting: in a dark room, you need to budget for horticultural lighting, not a spare desk lamp.

Can I grow tomatoes or carrots in it?

No, and for two different reasons. The carrot is a taproot: its storage organ needs to push down into a loose medium, and it hits the bottom of the basket within a few days, which gives short, forked roots. The large-fruited tomato, for its part, weighs several kilos at maturity, cantilevered from a basket a few centimetres wide anchored in the wall. The staked determinate cherry tomato is the realistic upper limit.

Does the reservoir solution need replacing?

The water no longer reaches the top, or one tier stays dry: where do you start?

No tier is getting water: check the pump. The flow rate printed on the packaging is a free-flow figure, measured with no lift; at 2 metres it drops very low and nothing reaches the top. Next come a pipe that is too narrow, too long or kinked, a strainer clogged with root fragments, and a water level so low that the pump loses its prime.

Only one tier stays dry: that tier's distributor is blocked. Take it apart and rinse it, using white vinegar if the deposit is white and hard. Three things block it: carbonates from hard water, poorly dissolved fertiliser salts, and fragments drawn up from the bottom of the reservoir.

Increasing the flow rate will not clear anything: the water bypasses the obstruction and the tier stays dry. Dissolving the fertiliser completely before adding it to the reservoir removes the most common cause on its own.

How long can I go on holiday without everything dying?

Less time than you might think. At full plant load, a tower of 30 plants uses around 2.4 to 3.4 litres per day, and a tower of 44 plants more, especially in hot weather.

You can work it out at home in 2 days: mark the reservoir level, note the drop on an established crop, then divide the remaining volume by that daily consumption. For an absence longer than the result, arrange an automatic top-up or ask someone to call in.

Can I leave it outside all year round, and will it stand up to the wind?

What matters is the ratio between height and footprint: 1.95 m tall on a base of 53 cm, with the leaf mass at the top. On an exposed balcony, above the 7th floor, anchor the tower to a wall or to a vertical support.

For winter, store it under cover: light and frost damage the material, and below 5 °C the crop stops growing anyway. Drain the circuit before the first frosts, as water freezing in a distributor will split it.

Why are my lower plants smaller than the upper ones?

Because they receive less light. In a vertical column, the radiation received and the fresh weight of the plants decrease from the top towards the base: the upper levels take a share of the light. The column layout produces this difference by design.

What can be corrected is the distribution. The plants most demanding of light, lettuces and basil, go at the top, the more tolerant ones at the bottom, and at each transplanting whatever has spent a cycle at the bottom moves up a level. Count on a staggered harvest rather than on 11 identical levels on the same day.
