Solid end cap to close the head of a NFT channel measuring 100 x 80 mm
The 100 × 80 mm solid NFT end cap is a closed end piece that seals the head of an NFT channel with a 100 x 80 mm profile, on the side where the water arrives. It retains the nutrient solution and blocks light over the 80 mm height, which limits algae. It is sealed with PVC glue or silicone and can be drilled with a drill bit.
A growing channel has two ends, and they do not play the same role. The end you fit this cap to lets nothing out: it closes the 100 x 80 mm profile across its full cross-section, with no opening or fitting, and it is placed at the head of the channel, on the side where the water enters.
🌑 Waterproofing and light exclusion
An end cap holds back the water, and it also stops the light, which matters just as much for the crop. An open end lights up the bottom of the channel, and a lit nutrient solution turns green. Algae then settle exactly where your roots need room, then pass into the circuit and end up in the pump. This end cap closes the profile over its full height of 80 mm, without leaving a gap above the film of water.
The outlet cap for the other end
This plain end cap goes hand in hand with the 32 mm drilled outlet end cap, fitted at the low end of the channel. One closes the head of the line, the other carries the water to the reservoir through a 32 mm fitting, and so you equip a bare channel at both ends in the same order. Take one of each per line, whatever the number of channels connected between the two.
🪛 Fitting it for good
Sealing is done with PVC glue or silicone, and it is best to treat it as permanent. Fit the cap dry, set the channel at its slope, run clean water through, then glue only once the water path suits you. If your line is likely to change, silicone can still be removed; PVC glue cannot. These end caps are for the gutter supplied without end stops, whereas a channel already closed at the factory needs none.
📐 Its place in the line
Fit the solid cap at the high point, where the supply line delivers the solution, since the slope then carries the water towards the outlet, at roughly 1 cm per metre. If your inlet pipe has to enter through the end rather than through the lid, this cap can be drilled with a drill bit, at low speed and at the exact diameter of the pipe, and a bead of silicone around the entry point then makes it watertight.
🐟 The flagship of aquaponics
In aquaponics, the water arriving at the head of the channel comes from the fish pond. It first passes through a mechanical filter, because the solids it carries would otherwise settle at the bottom of the profile and between the roots.
