1.8 m double-wall channel supplied bare, end fittings to assemble and glue
The 100 × 80 mm double-wall NFT channel, 1.8 m long, is supplied without end caps, so you can choose the end piece for each end. It has 8 positions spaced 200 mm apart, with 5 x 7 cm baskets supplied. A blank cap and an outlet cap drilled to 32 mm, to be glued, must be ordered separately.
A factory-closed channel dictates its configuration: drainage on both sides, or drainage and a plug. When your line calls for a different arrangement, such as a water inlet at the end or a continuous line of channels joined end to end, this channel supplied bare lets you fit each end as you see fit.
The profile is that of the closed version, at 100 by 80 mm, with a double wall and slots spaced 200 mm apart. The bare channel measures 1.8 m and carries 8 slots, with its 8 baskets of 5 x 7 cm, while the version with bonded end caps measures 1.85 m. The difference that matters lies at the two ends, which arrive without end caps, so you decide for yourself what each one becomes. The stiffening ribs and the inner surface are the same, so a bare channel and a channel with end caps can be fitted on the same line.
🧩 Putting together your two ends
Each end gets the cap you give it. The solid end cap closes one end and shuts out the light, on the side where the water comes in. The outlet end cap drilled to 32 mm handles the return to the reservoir, on the side where the water leaves. A single channel therefore needs one of each, whereas a channel in the middle of a line connects to its neighbour with a coupling.
A line that comes to an end
The channel takes a solid end cap at the upstream end and an outlet cap at the downstream end, so two end pieces in total.
A line that carries on
A joiner connects it to the next channel, with no end cap between the two.

The solid plug can be drilled out to let the pipe through.

A glued fitting can no longer be taken apart
Sealing is done with PVC cement or silicone, and PVC cement is permanent on this material. Dry-fit your end caps, lay the channel at its slope, run clean water through it, and only glue once the water path has been checked. If you think you may reconfigure the line later, choose silicone, which can be removed.
Count its nozzles before ordering
The calculation only needs doing once, from the plan of your line. Three channels joined end to end need one solid end cap at the head, one outlet end cap at the foot and two couplings between them, whereas three independent channels need three solid end caps and three outlet end caps. Order them at the same time as the channels, so that you do not have to stop the build halfway along a line.
The bare channel leaves you free to choose your configuration: a line of 3 channels joined end to end by connectors, with no step between them, a water inlet through an end drilled with a drill bit rather than from the top, or a channel cut to the length of your supports. None of these configurations exists as a factory-closed version. In return, it takes time to assemble and two extra purchases per channel, not to mention the time the glue needs to set before the first filling. The choice should therefore be made at the planning stage, because an end cap bonded with PVC cement cannot be removed.
🔩 Bare or with bonded terminals
The choice between the two versions depends on the layout of your installation. If your line fits one of the two standard configurations, the pre-bonded end-cap version spares you the gluing, on the same profile. If you are assembling an unusual line, if you plan to extend it later, or if you want control over where the water arrives, the bare channel is the only one that allows it. Finally, check the spacing of your supports, because the bare channel measures 1.8 m, against 1.85 m for the pre-bonded end-cap version.
🌾 What grows in this profile
With 80 mm beneath the lid and 8 positions spaced 200 mm apart, this channel is made for plants that spread wide and stay in place: strawberries, basil grown as a bush, branching herbs. The double wall adds an air gap that cushions the temperature swing between the afternoon and the end of the night, which matters in an unheated greenhouse. A short-cycle lettuce also grows very well there, but the generous spacing loses a few plants per metre compared with a tight profile, so the choice depends on what you grow most of the time.
🧼 Cleaning the channel
An NFT channel should be cleaned between two crops, and the double wall does not change that rule. Remove the baskets, take the line apart if the end caps are silicone-sealed, then run a long brush or a bottle brush along the whole length to dislodge the brown film that builds up over the weeks. This biofilm reduces the usable cross-section of the flow and ends up trapping dead roots, which causes the overflows that are wrongly blamed on the pump. A rinse with clean water is enough in most cases, and you keep disinfectant for after a root attack.
