Precision scales to 0.01 g, silicone bowl, 100 or 200 g
This pocket scale accurate to a hundredth of a gram weighs up to 100 g or 200 g depending on the model, and stores in a foldable silicone bowl that also serves as a weighing container. It measures out a nutrient salt, an iron chelate, fine seeds or the daily ration for the fish of a small system.
The summary
- What you receive: the scale, its foldable silicone bowl with lid and two AAA batteries.
- Accuracy: 0.01 g, up to 100 g for the SBM-100 and 200 g for the SBS-200.
- What it is for: weighing a few grams of nutrient salt, chelate or seeds without rounding.
- Which model to choose: 100 g for powders only, 200 g if you also want to weigh the fish ration.
- Size: 9 x 6 cm or 12.2 x 7 cm, stored in its closed bowl.
- What is shipped to you: a small parcel of about 300 g sent from France.
Weighing to the hundredth of a gram to dose fertiliser, seeds and fish feed
The On Balance scale weighs to a hundredth of a gram, up to 100 g (SBM-100) or 200 g (SBS-200). It stows in a foldable silicone bowl that also serves as a container, offers tare, counting and automatic switch-off, and runs on two AAA batteries supplied. It is used to measure out fertilisers, chelates, seeds or the fish ration.
Kitchen scales show whole grams, so 0.6 g and 1.4 g both read as 1 g. On a dose of 1 to 2 g, such as a mineral fertiliser for a sump tank of a few dozen litres, this rounding can amount to half the dose. This On Balance scale reads to the hundredth of a gram, or 0.01 g, and you see exactly what you are adding, from nutrient salt to iron chelate.
⚖️ Two capacities, one principle
Both models work in the same way. The SBM-100 weighs up to 100 g on a stainless steel platform of 5.5 x 5.1 cm, and the SBS-200 goes up to 200 g on a platform of 7.5 x 6.4 cm, with a larger display. Each one fits inside a foldable silicone bowl closed by a latch lid: folded, it protects the scale from knocks in a drawer or a toolbox, and unfolded it becomes the container into which you pour the powder.
Tare
Place the empty bowl on it, press the button, and the screen then counts only the product poured in.
Counting
The scale counts identical pieces from a sample, useful for coated seeds.
Automatic shut-off
It switches itself off after 3 minutes without weighing, which spares the two AAA batteries.
Protection
An overload protection reduces the risk of damaging the sensor by exceeding its capacity.
🧪 Dosing a nutrient solution
The hundredth of a gram comes into its own for small preparations. DTPA chelated iron is dosed at around 18 g per 1,000 L: for a 100 L tank, you therefore need 1.8 g, a quantity that the scale displays to the nearest hundredth, whereas a scale reading to the gram wavers between 1 and 2 g. Epsom salt, potassium bicarbonate or a three-part fertiliser are weighed in the same way, each in its own clean, dry bowl. Always weigh the powder before dissolving it, then pour the solution into the sump tank while stirring.
A stock solution for tiny doses
Below one gram, weigh ten times the dose, dissolve it in a litre of water, then draw off a tenth of this stock solution with a graduated syringe. The reading error is divided by ten, and the solution keeps for a few days in a cool place in a labelled, opaque bottle.
The capacity includes the bowl
The 100 or 200 g capacity includes the container placed on the pan. Set the load down gently, on a stable table and away from any draught, and wait for the display to settle before reading: at hundredths of a gram, a breath or a vibration shows up on the screen.
🐟 Feeding the fish in aquaponics
In aquaponics, it is the fish feed that nourishes the plants, and the quantity is set according to the cultivated area. The FAO guide to small-scale aquaponics recommends roughly 40 to 50 g of feed per square metre per day for leafy vegetables. The SBS-200 therefore weighs out in one go the ration for 2 m² of lettuces, that is 80 to 100 g, leaving some margin in the bowl, and you can track to the gram what the tank receives, day after day. Weighing the ration rather than pouring it by eye prevents overfeeding, which loads the water with ammonia before the bacteria can convert it. The trout feed in 5.5 mm pellets can be weighed straight into the bowl in this way.
🎯 Calibration and warranty
The scale leaves the factory calibrated, and you probably won't need to adjust it for a long time. Check it from time to time with a reliable weight, never with a coin or a packet whose weight is printed on it, as those values remain approximate. To calibrate it, follow the sequence in the instructions: on the SBS-200, hold down the MODE key until CAL is displayed, confirm the zero with the pan empty, then place the weight that the screen flashes. The 100 g weight is used for checking on both models. Its 10-year warranty covers manufacturing defects, but not drops, overloading or contact with a liquid: dry the case before closing your scale back inside it.
