Heirloom two-season Batavia lettuce, 500 farm-saved seeds, spring and late season
The Gloire du Dauphiné batavia lettuce seeds, from the Kokopelli association, are used to grow a traditional batavia that forms a crisp head of 120 to 180 g. The packet contains 500 organic, open-pollinated seeds. As this variety tolerates cool climates, it is sown from February to June and then in August and September, with one plant every 30 cm.
Gloire du Dauphiné is a batavia, a crisp-leaved lettuce that forms a large head, looser than that of a butterhead lettuce. An old French variety, known in the United States as Sierra, it turns a bright green washed with red and copes well with cool climates. This is why it has two sowing windows in the year, in spring and at the end of summer, where an early lettuce has only one.
🍃 Two seasons in the year
The calendar splits into two. In spring, sow under cover from February to April, then in place from April to June, for cuts from April to June. At the end of summer, a second batch sown in place in August and September gives lettuces in October and November. In between, July remains unfavourable for sowing, because above 25 °C lettuce seed germinates poorly and young plants quickly bolt.
February to April
Sow under cover, in pots or module trays, at between 10 and 18 °C.
April to June
Sow in place, in rows 30 cm apart, one batch every 15 days.
August and September
Start the autumn series, harvested in October and November.
💧 On deep water culture
A lettuce uses little nitrogen and keeps a short root system, so Gloire du Dauphiné settles easily on a raft, even in a water system that was started only recently. The only adjustment is space: a batavia spreads more than a butterhead, and each plant needs 30 cm on each side. In a grow bed, you keep that same spacing between pots, and you sow the August batch directly into the supports that will be used in autumn.
A broad head needs a broad tank
To start the plants that will go on the raft, sow in sponge pods: the plug then slips into the basket with no transplanting and no loss of compost. As for the container, a fairly open grow bed leaves the 30 cm that a Batavia lettuce occupies when fully grown. This combination lets you run both seasons one after the other in the same spots.
Drill the raft holes 30 cm apart
On a raft drilled at 25 cm or less, the leaves of two neighbouring batavia lettuces overlap. The foliage then stays damp long after dew or condensation, and the base of the heads becomes spotted and then rots. Space the holes 30 cm apart, even if it means growing a few fewer plants.
🌱 Sow thinly, thin out in two stages
Cover the seed with a thin layer of soil, no more, then firm lightly and water, because like all lettuces it germinates better in the light. Germination takes 7 to 14 days. When sowing in rows, thin first to 10 cm, then to 30 cm once the plants touch; the lettuces removed at the first thinning can already be eaten or transplanted elsewhere. When sown in pots, batavia is transplanted at the 4-leaf stage, about a month after sowing, which gains several weeks on soil that is still cold in February and March.
🍂 The August series
A sowing at the end of August benefits from still-warm soil and cooling nights, conditions that suit lettuce well. The hearts swell until October and are cut as needed until November. If you want to carry on into the depths of winter, Verte de Cambrai lamb's lettuce takes over, and the guide to autumn sowings in aquaponics shows how to link the two.

What you need to know
- The August window is the one many people forget: warm soil, cool nights, and a harvest in October and November, when the vegetable garden is emptying.
- Sow thinly rather than thinning heavily. A batavia lettuce takes up 30 cm square, so a pinch of seeds is enough to cover a metre of row.
- Transplant young, at the 4-leaf stage. A plant set out too old establishes poorly and bolts sooner.
- Cut leaf by leaf instead of taking the whole head. The plant then keeps producing for several weeks.
- Wash just before serving. The frilly leaf holds water between its folds, and a lettuce washed in advance goes limp within a day in the fridge.
- On a deep water culture raft, drill the holes at 30 cm rather than 25. Overlapping leaves stay wet and develop spots from the base.
