100 g precision mini scale accurate to a hundredth of a gram
This precision mini scale reads to one hundredth of a gram up to 100 g and fits in the palm of your hand. Its rigid lid protects the sensor in a drawer, then flips over to become a weighing tray for measuring out an iron chelate, a nutrient salt or a handful of fine seeds.
The summary
- What you receive: the scale, its rigid lid and two AAA batteries.
- The precision: 0.01 g up to 100 g, on a stainless steel platform 5.6 cm square.
- The lid: it protects the sensor when closed and becomes a weighing tray when turned over.
- What it is for: dosing a chelate for a few litres, or the ration for the fish in a small tank.
100 g pocket scale accurate to 0.01 g, with a lid that doubles as a weighing tray, for small doses
The On Balance Myco MX-100 mini scale weighs to 0.01 g up to 100 g, on a 5.6 cm stainless steel pan protected by a rigid cover that turns over to serve as a tray. It measures out an iron chelate for a few litres, a nutrient salt or the feed ration for the fish in a 200 L tank.
Some doses come down to a few tenths of a gram: an iron chelate for a 10 L bucket, a trace element for a grow tower, a batch of microgreens seeds. This Myco MX-100 mini scale from On Balance reads to the hundredth of a gram up to 100 g, in a 9.2 x 6 cm casing that weighs barely 66 g with batteries. It fits in your drawer or toolbox, next to the products it is used to measure.
🔒 A lid that serves twice
The rigid lid clips onto the scale and protects the weighing sensor when it travels in a toolbox or is stored next to the sump tank. Turned over and placed on the 5.6 x 5.6 cm stainless steel platform, it becomes a larger tray: press tare to clear its weight, then pour the powder into it. The green backlit display is easy to read in a dark utility room, and the scale switches itself off after 3 minutes without weighing.
Tare
The weight of the lid or a cup disappears at a press, and only the product poured in is displayed.
Calibration
A single button starts calibration, to be repeated from time to time with a calibration weight.
Overdose
Built-in protection reduces the risk of damaging the sensor when you exceed 100 g.
🧪 Doses for a few litres
A scales accurate to the gram cannot weigh 0.18 g, yet that is the dose of DTPA chelated iron for a 10 L bucket at a rate of 18 g per 1,000 L. The MX-100 displays this quantity, provided you place it on a stable surface and let the display settle, and it weighs a trace element or a pinch of Epsom salt for a grow tower in just the same way. Always weigh into the lid or a small tared cup, never directly on the pan, so as not to leave salts on the stainless steel. The displayed hundredth of a gram remains a readability figure: on 0.18 g, an error of 0.02 g already represents 11% of the dose, hence the value of a stock solution for buckets.
A stock solution for doses of less than a gram
For such a fine dose, prepare a stock solution: 1.8 g in 1 litre of water, of which you take 100 ml per 10 L bucket, with a syringe or a measuring jug. The weighing then involves a quantity ten times larger, and every bucket receives the same dose.
100 g, lid included
The 100 g capacity includes the inverted lid or the cup placed on the platform. For a bag of feed or a heavier preparation, a higher-capacity scale is more suitable, and this one keeps the small doses.
🐟 In aquaponics, weigh rather than estimate
In aquaponics, the activity of nitrifying bacteria lowers alkalinity, and the pH drops with it. Potassium bicarbonate raises it at a rate of about 36 g per cubic metre per degree of KH, according to the product's data sheet. For a 200 L system, one degree therefore means 7.2 g, a dose that can be weighed exactly and split over several days so as not to shock the fish. A KH test before and after the addition confirms the effect. New Mexico State University, for its part, advises alternating calcium hydroxide and potassium hydroxide to bring the pH back towards 7, which again means weighing small quantities of powder before dissolving them.
Iron is the other element that needs fine dosing. It is often lacking in an aquaponic system, and the same university recommends adding DTPA chelated iron at 2 mg/L every three weeks, while the FAO manual cites 1 to 2 mg/L during the first three months. With a chelate rated at 11% iron, aiming for 2 mg/L in 200 L requires 0.4 g of iron, or about 3.6 g of product: a quantity that the MX-100 weighs to the hundredth of a gram, whereas an error of one gram would represent nearly a third of the dose. Then dilute the powder in a bucket of water from the system before pouring it in, rather than tipping it directly into the pond.
Finally, the scale is useful for weighing the fish ration in a small system. The FAO manual allows 1 to 2% of the fish's body weight per day for fish over 50 g, and its ceiling of 20 kg of fish per cubic metre limits a 200 L tank to 4 kg, which means 40 to 80 g of feed per day. A ration of this size sits within the 100 g capacity, lid included, and weighing it every day gives you precise data for linking the feed given to the nitrates measured and to plant growth. The guide to iron deficiencies helps you recognise foliage that needs a supplement.
