The summary

  • What it produces: sprouts and microgreens to eat raw, harvested between day 4 and day 21.
  • What you receive: 1 to 3 glass jars of 1 L with a stainless steel mesh lid, as a complete kit or as jars only.
  • The daily routine: 2 to 3 rinses, then the jar left to rest at an angle on its stand.
  • Jar or grid: sprouts in the jar, leafy microgreens on the grid tray.
  • What can be cleaned: the glass and the stainless steel, in hot water or in the dishwasher between two batches.
  • How it arrives: in a standard parcel, alone or with the rest of your order.

Glass jars with sieve lids, for sprouts and kitchen microgreens

This sprouter germinates your seeds in a 1 L glass jar, placed upside down on its stand: the rinsing water drains through the stainless steel mesh lid, and the sprouts grow in the open air, without soil. After 8 to 12 hours of soaking, radish, broccoli or mung bean seeds give sprouts to eat raw, prepared on a corner of the worktop. The complete kit adds to each jar a grid tray for leafy microgreens, a sachet of organic seeds and a growing guide.

🫙 The jar and its sieve

A sprouting jar works by successive rinses, not from a reserve of water. You fill the jar with fresh water through the lid, swirl it gently, then drain through the same strainer, whose fine mesh holds back the seeds. The jar then returns to its stand, tilted neck-down above its tray: the remaining water drains away, air circulates between the seeds, and nothing stagnates at the bottom. This rinse, repeated 2 to 3 times a day, provides the moisture the seed needs and washes away the residues that would make the batch ferment. The glass lets you follow germination at any time, and it goes in the dishwasher with the lid between batches.

Soaking, 8 to 12 hours

The dry seeds swell in the jar filled with fresh water, then you drain this water through the strainer before the first rinse.

Germination, 2 to 10 days

The jar stays tilted on its stand, out of direct sunlight, and is rinsed 2 to 3 times a day until the sprouts emerge.

Light, 2 to 14 days

Near a window, in indirect light, the sprouts turn green; harvest falls between the 4th and 21st day depending on the species.

Organic seeds for the next batches

The complete kit supplies one sachet of organic seeds per jar, enough to start your first batches as soon as you open the parcel. For later on, the organic sprouting seed sets bring together 10 or 20 varieties in separate sachets, from legumes to brassicas, and their instructions use the same soaking and rinsing times as the sprouter guide. You can thus grow a different species in each jar and change the flavour with every batch.

The jar drains tilted, never upright

A jar left upright keeps a layer of water at the bottom in which the seeds ferment, which you can recognise by a sour smell and a greyish film. After each rinse, put it back on its stand, neck facing down, above the tray that collects the water, and empty that tray every time. Do not fill the jar with dry seeds beyond a thin layer either, as the seeds swell when soaked and increase several times in volume as they sprout.

🌱 Jar or grid tray

The complete kit offers two ways of getting seeds to sprout, and each suits a different group. The jar produces sprouts, that is, germinated seeds eaten whole, shoot and root included: mung bean, radish, broccoli, lentil and alfalfa all do well in it. The mesh tray produces microgreens, young leafy seedlings that are cut above the mesh. The seeds are spread in a single layer with the mesh resting on the tray, and the leaves turn green in the light while the roots cling to the mesh. Cress, whose seeds are coated in a sticky mucilage and form a compact mass in a jar, does better on the mesh. If a batch sprouts poorly, our article on germination failures and their causes will help you find the source of the problem.

📦 Complete kit or jars only

The complete kit includes, for each jar, a stand, a tray, a grid and a packet of organic seeds, along with a shared growing guide and access to the 10-part ZenGreens video course. It suits a first purchase, as it lets you start a batch the moment the parcel is opened. The jars-only version, with 2 or 3 jars, contains the 1 L jars and their sieve lids: it is aimed at those who already have their seeds and their method, or who want to add stations to a kit already in use. Choose the number of jars according to how much you eat, because one jar produces one batch at a time, whereas two or three jars staggered by a few days give an almost continuous harvest.

🔁 Staggering the batches

Three jars started on the same day give you three harvests on the same day, then several days with nothing. Instead, stagger each new batch by 3 or 4 days from the previous one, and you will have sprouts ready at regular intervals. Sow only one species per jar as well, because the seeds in a mix differ in size and in how quickly they germinate, so the fastest are ready before the others have even come up. Once harvested, the sprouts should be rinsed, drained thoroughly and kept for a few days in the fridge in a closed container. To choose where to put the sprouter in your kitchen, our guide to setting up an indoor seedling area explains the light and temperature that suit them.
