JBL ProFlora Advanced fermentation CO2 kit for aquariums
This CO2 fertilisation kit for a planted aquarium of 40 to 110 litres produces its gas by biological fermentation, with no pressurised cylinder.
One charge provides 40 days of steady diffusion. Tank, glass diffuser, pipe and non-return valve are in the box.

CO2 fertilisation by fermentation, for a planted aquarium of 40 to 110 litres
The JBL ProFlora Advanced fermentation CO2 kit adds CO2 to a planted freshwater aquarium of 40 to 110 litres, with no pressurised cylinder. The gas is produced by biological fermentation in the reaction tank, with production starting within 24 to 48 hours. Each charge provides around 40 days of diffusion, and the box contains two.
This kit makes its own CO2 in a reaction tank, by biological fermentation, and delivers it into the aquarium through a glass diffuser. It needs no pressurised cylinder, no regulator and no refill point. One charge of bio-components produces gas for about 40 days, and the box contains two. The kit is designed for a planted freshwater aquarium of 40 to 110 litres: check your actual volume, decor deducted, before ordering.
🧪 Getting started
The tank takes only a few minutes to prepare. Pour in component A, then component B, as a single refill, and top up with about 500 ml of tempered tap water, between 20 and 25 °C, up to the upper mark and never beyond it. Screw the lid back on fully, then shake the tank briefly, holding a finger over the fitting opening. The micro-organisms in the mixture then break down the organic substrate, and CO2 production starts within 24 to 48 hours. It stays more or less constant for 40 days, because the substrate combines a reserve that is released straight away with one that is released slowly.
The gas reaches the aquarium through 3 metres of special CO2 tubing. One end connects to the glass diffuser, which you fix near the bottom, in a spot where the water circulates gently. The tubing then comes back out of the aquarium and is cut 10 to 20 cm above the surface: this is where the non-return valve goes, arrow pointing towards the aquarium, and the remaining piece then connects the valve to the tank. This valve stops aquarium water flowing back into the tank when production stops.
Measuring dissolved CO2 after start-up
The dissolved CO2 drop test tells you what the tank actually delivers to your aquarium once production has started. Take a first measurement 2 to 3 days after filling, when the bubbles have been coming out of the diffuser for at least a day, then another around the middle of the charge. You then know whether the diffuser is well placed and whether your plants are receiving the expected gas, instead of guessing from their appearance alone.
🌡️ Thermal protection
Fermentation slows down in the cold. Used on its own, the tank is designed for a room at 21 to 23 °C, and its output may become insufficient in a cooler room. This kit solves the problem with a thermal shield that sticks onto a side pane of the aquarium, cleaned beforehand, using the double-sided adhesive tape supplied. It passes the water temperature on to the tank, so output hardly depends on the room temperature any more. If no side pane is accessible, you can screw the shield inside the cabinet or onto a nearby vertical surface. The whole set is for indoor use, away from frost.
A single refill in the tank, never more
Never pour in more than the contents of one refill, and do not go past the upper mark when adding water. If a large quantity of the mixture got into the aquarium, the water would turn cloudy and run short of oxygen, which would call for a large partial water change. Keep the tank upright in its thermal protection, out of reach of children, and check its level regularly.
🔁 Refilling after 40 days
The end of a charge is easy to recognise: no more bubbles come out of the diffuser, because the grow medium is exhausted. You then remove the pipe from the lid, dispose of the residue with the waste water and rinse the tank with lukewarm tap water, before restarting it exactly as on the first day with the second refill from the box. The two charges supplied therefore cover roughly 80 days of diffusion, and each subsequent restart requires a refill of components A and B. Note the date of each fill, since it is the simplest reference for anticipating the next one.
🌿 The right grow bed for this kit
Between 40 and 110 litres, this kit can be set up without drilling, without fitting a regulator and without handling compressed gas, which makes it easy to install on a living-room aquarium. The gas mainly benefits well-lit fast-growing plants, and it lowers the pH of the water as it dissolves: a drop-type pH test should therefore accompany your first few weeks. The kit is not used on an aquaponics system, where the plants grow in open air and take their carbon from the atmosphere; the work there is about the pH and the nutrients supplied by the fish.
📦 What's in the box
The box contains the reaction tank with its thermal protection and the filter element for its lid, plus two bio-component refills, each made up of a component A and a component B. The gas line includes 3 metres of special CO2 pipe, the non-return valve and the glass diffuser. The double-sided adhesive tape and the fixing screw complete the set, so you have all the equipment needed for the first 80 days of diffusion.
