Small germination kits: pack of 6 or 10
This germination kit brings together individual trays, each with its own watertight base and ventilated lid, along with all the transplanting tools: scissors, tweezers, a brush, a dibber, a fork, a trowel, and gloves. Watering is done from below: water poured into the base travels up through the grow medium by capillary action.
The summary
- What you receive: 6 or 10 trays, their watertight bases and ventilated lids.
- The cell: 3.7 by 3.7 centimetres and 5.5 deep, 12 per tray.
- Care: keep covered until germination, 3 to 15 days depending on the species, then increase ventilation gradually.
- Watering: from below — water reaches the grow medium by capillary action from the watertight base.
- Tools included: scissors, tweezers, a brush, a dibber, a fork, a trowel, gloves and 20 labels.
- How to choose: the integrated lighting is worth having when the room lacks natural light.
6 or 10 independent trays, 72 or 120 cells, with transplanting tools
A germination tray keeps the seed warm and moist until it germinates. This set brings together 6 or 10, allowing you to run several sowings at different dates, as each tray has its own 12 cells, a watertight base and a vented lid, and is managed independently of the others.
🌱 Multiple trays, multiple sowing dates
A single large tray means a single schedule for everything. Every cell is sown on the same day, ventilated on the same day and pricked out on the same day, yet basil can be up within a few days while an aubergine takes twice as long. You end up uncovering seeds that have not yet germinated, or keeping seedlings that are beginning to stretch under a lid that should have been lifted. With 19 by 14.5 cm units, each one follows its own timetable: you open the ventilation on the one that has germinated, leave the others closed, and resow in the one that has been emptied.
One variety per tray
Each one germinates at its own pace, without neighbouring seedlings being exposed too early or kept covered too long.
One lid per tray
Ventilation opens where the shoots have emerged, and remains closed everywhere else.
Labels included
After 3 weeks, two brassica seedlings look very similar, and the label tells you the variety.
💧 A base that acts as a reservoir
The watertight base on which each tray sits serves both as a drip tray and a water inlet. Pour a small amount of water into the base, place the tray on top, and capillary action draws moisture up into the grow medium without a single drop touching the leaves or the collar. A surface that remains wet encourages damping off, a collar disease that can destroy an entire batch within a few days. After half an hour, empty whatever remains in the base, so that the plug stays moist without ever sitting in water.
Filling cells without compost
A cell 5.5 cm deep will take compost, but if your seedlings are moving on to a gutter or a basket, an inert growing medium transplants far more cleanly. The germination sponge pods fit into the cell and transfer in one piece, with no substrate breaking up into the water circuit. And when the room is still cool at the end of winter, a heat mat slipped under the trays can take several days off the germination time of summer crops.
Aeration that opens in stages
The lid stays in place until germination, which takes between 3 and 15 days depending on the species. After that, ventilation is opened gradually rather than all at once, because seedlings accustomed to saturated air can collapse within a few hours if uncovered abruptly. Open the vents halfway for 2 or 3 days, then remove the lid. When washing, avoid harsh detergents, as residues accumulate at the bottom of the cells and interfere with subsequent seedlings.
🪴 From the cell to the gutter
In aquaponics as in hydroponics, transplanting spring seedlings is when plants are lost. The 5.5 cm depth matters more here than the surface area, as it gives the roots time to form a rootball firm enough to survive the move into a growing basket, rather than falling apart in your hands. The right moment is when the first true leaves appear, before the roots have wound around the base of the cell. Push the rootball out from below rather than pulling on the stem, it comes out whole, and the neighbouring cells are left undisturbed.
📦 What arrives in the parcel
The pack of 6 includes 6 trays of 12 cells, their 6 watertight bases and 6 lids, while the pack of 10 provides the same components for a total of 120 cells. Also included are 20 plant labels, six small transplanting tools, scissors, tweezers, a brush, a dibber, a fork and a trowel, along with a pair of gloves. Everything is made from polypropylene, is removable, stackable and washable in warm water. Empty trays nest inside one another when out of season, which matters when you own ten of them.
