The set of three medium-sized germination kits contains three trays of 40 cells, making 120 seedling spaces, each with its own vented dome and watertight base. Watering is done from below, by capillary action, which is gentle on delicate seeds. Each tray measures 37 by 23 cm and is 12 cm high, dome included.

Each tray measures 37 by 23 cm and is only 12 cm high, dome included, so it slides under a shelf and sits on an ordinary worktop. The cells are about 5 cm deep in a 35 by 23 cm cell tray, which is enough to hold the grow medium steady and let a root plug form before transplanting, without drowning a small seed under too much compost. The clear PET lets you see what is going on underneath without having to lift anything.

🚿 Bottom watering

The sealed base takes the water, and capillary action draws it up into the grow medium of each cell. This is the right technique for delicate seeds, since no seed is displaced by a jet of water, no young stem gets wet, and the moisture spreads by itself over the full height of the cell. It also avoids puddles under the trays and needless evaporation. You pour in a shallow layer of water, leave it to work, then empty whatever remains once the grow medium is damp.

🌾 Removing a plant without breaking it

The right moment is when the first true leaves appear, when the roots hold the plug together without having yet circled at the bottom of the cell. Then push the plug up from underneath the cell: it comes out whole, with its rootlets. A plant that keeps all its rootlets establishes faster once in place in the tank or the gutter, which limits gaps in your batch of seedlings.

Fill the 40 cells with a light compost

The cells of this tray are about 5 cm deep, and how well the root ball is aerated over that whole depth depends on the grow medium. Fill them with a light peat-free seed compost, which is watered from below through the watertight base. For species that dislike excess water, mix in a little perlite, which keeps air in the root ball. A medium that is too dense holds water at the bottom of the cell and rots the roots before they have filled the volume.

Water poured over the top

Watering from above defeats the purpose of the watertight base, because the seeds shift, the collars stay damp and damping off sets in. The dome, for its part, is opened slightly as soon as the seedlings emerge and not before, otherwise the humidity that favoured germination becomes the humidity that favours mould. Between batches, wash and then disinfect the trays, and never reuse as they are a tray in which a batch has damped off.

📐 The intermediate size

This format sits between the single large tray and the sets of small trays. With 40 cells per tray, you have enough room for a uniform batch of a single variety, which a 12-cell tray does not allow, and it is still small enough not to commit a whole shelf to a single sowing date. Three trays therefore give you three dates or three varieties, whereas the sets of small trays offer 6 to 10 but in shorter batches. A 40-cell tray can, for example, take a full batch of lettuces, while the other two carry herbs and tomatoes sown at other dates.

🔁 Reusing the trays

PET lasts several seasons provided it is handled gently and stored dry. Wash the trays in clean water as soon as a batch is finished, dry them before stacking them, and store the domes separately rather than nesting them under pressure, which strains their corners. Finally, avoid leaving them in the sun between uses, because ultraviolet light gradually makes clear plastic brittle.
