Two-tray microgreens sprouter with ribs to regrow your vegetables

The double microgreens sprouter, made up of 2 cups of 16 cm in a single saucer, is used to grow microgreens on the worktop, in a footprint of 30.5 by 16 cm. Each cup takes about 5 g of seeds and is ready to harvest in 6 to 10 days, at 18 to 24 °C. The five ribs also allow you to regrow celery.

This double sprouter brings together two 16 cm cups in a single oval saucer, for growing microgreens next to the chopping board. Each cup combines a deep sieve and an intermediate sieve on which the seeds rest, and five adjustable ribs can turn one of the two spaces into a regrowing tray for a celery base or spring onions.

Microgreens are young seedlings of radish, broccoli, kohlrabi, mustard, cress or rocket, which you cut 6 to 10 days after sowing, once their first leaves have opened. They differ from sprouted seeds, which are eaten whole after a few days, because they grow in the light and are harvested without their seed. Allow about 5 g of seed per tray, which is one heaped teaspoon, and a room between 18 and 24 °C.

💧 Perlan, gel or plain water

Perlan is a cellulose fibre laid on the intermediate tray: spray it until it is wet, spread the seeds over it, then keep it damp by spraying 2 to 4 times a day. The gel is a potassium-based absorbent that is hydrated separately in about 170 ml of water and forms a thick layer in 5 minutes, which you spread over the tray before sowing. Plain water, with no support at all, allows a first trial without buying anything else, provided you change it every day, and it cannot be combined with regrowing vegetables in the same saucer.

Two ranges of sprouting seeds to alternate

The organic sprouting seed kits supply seeds intended to be eaten young, which suits microgreens better than a garden packet. Choose two different ranges and sow them 3 or 4 days apart, one per tray. You then cut one while the other grows, and harvest microgreens every 3 or 4 days instead of once every 10 days.

🔄 Two offset cups

If started on the same day, the two trays reach cutting together, and then you wait 6 to 10 days for a new batch. Rather, sow the second 3 or 4 days after the first: when you cut one, the other is halfway there, and you only need to wash the harvested tray to resow it straight away. The lid stays on for about 48 hours on gel, and on perlite until the shoots reach the edge of the deep sieve. After that, place the sprouter in the natural light of a window, without which the stems stretch and stay pale, as in any poorly lit indoor seedling area.

Water to be changed every day, without exception

With the clear-water method, as with regrowing vegetables, the water in the saucer should be changed every day and topped up to the inner mark. Stagnant water encourages mould, which is one of the causes of germination failure, and it makes the base of the vegetables rot. As soon as roots appear on an onion, only those roots should stay in the water.

🥬 Regrowing vegetables

The five adjustable ribs slot into the deep sieve and form compartments to suit the width of your vegetables. Simply place the base of a celery plant, a carrot, a leek, a fennel bulb or a bunch of spring onions, cut to 2 to 5 cm, into a compartment, then fill with water up to the marker. New leaves grow from the base within a few days, and you can cut them as and when you need them. A cup of microgreens can grow alongside, on perlite or gel, while the other space is used for regrowing.

🧼 Cutting and maintenance

Cut about 1 cm above the perlite, or level with the rim of the deep sieve on gel, using clean scissors, which leaves the seed husks and the growing medium in the tray. The used perlite then goes on the compost heap. All the parts can be washed in lukewarm water with a little washing-up liquid, or put through the dishwasher at up to 50 °C, then rinsed and left to dry before the next sowing. The plastic is food-safe and BPA-free, and its speckled finish comes from coffee grounds mixed into the material.
