Guided videos and 3 months of follow-up to build your system, even as a beginner
The Tairoponie online course from T'Air Eau guides a beginner with no experience through building an aquaponic system step by step, from assembly to the first harvests. It includes guided videos, a downloadable plan, a weekly live session and 3 months of follow-up. About 2 m² of garden is enough to get started.
Tairoponie is an online course that guides you through building your own aquaponic system, from assembly to the first harvests. It is designed by a company from the Lyon region that itself installs aquaponic systems for private customers. You follow the programme from a smartphone or a computer, at your own pace, with personal support at every stage.
🎥 What the programme contains
The programme covers the whole build, from optimising the location of your installation to a complete, step-by-step method for the water, the fish and the plants. The training is entirely practical and entirely online, and the support lasts 3 months, with follow-up from one of the organisation's specialists. The live sessions are there to unblock whatever the videos did not anticipate, while the private community puts you in touch with other aquaponic growers in the middle of a build. No prior experience is needed to sign up.
Step-by-step videos
Each stage of the build is explained on video, and you follow it at your own pace.
A plan and a list
A construction plan can be downloaded, with the complete list of materials to gather.
Live streams and a community
A live session takes place every week, and a private space lets you chat with other students.
🐟 The system you are building
This system combines a buried fish pond and a grow bed. It comes in two sizes, a 500-litre tank designed for 50 trout, or a 1,000-litre tank with double the capacity, and about 2 square metres of garden is enough to get started. It houses cold-water fish intended for your table, rainbow trout, brook trout, also known as brook char, or perch, which the buried tank helps to keep cool. The fish produce the nutrients your plants consume, provided the bacteria in the grow bed have had time to establish themselves.
The same system, supplied as a kit
If you would rather receive the system ready to go than gather the equipment yourself, the 500 or 1,000-litre buried aquaponics kit is the same pond, supplied with its tanks, its air pump or pumps and its clay pebbles. A guide and video tutorials accompany the installation, and you save the time spent shopping around.
Water circulation relies on a 27 W air pump, installed outside the water, which injects bubbles at the base of a column: the water rises with them, so this air-lift principle moves water and oxygen at the same time, with no submersible water pump at all. The 500-litre size runs on one pump and the 1,000-litre size on two, that is 27 or 54 W continuously, which comes to roughly 0.65 or 1.3 kWh a day. This is the only electricity your system uses, and its only wearing part, which you can reach without getting your hands wet.
🥬 What the system produces
Once the system is in balance, the 500-litre size produces up to 30 kg of fish and up to 70 kg of vegetables per year, and the 1,000-litre size more than 50 kg of fish. These values are indicative, as they depend on the species grown and on how the system is run. Your vegetable harvests follow the amount of feed you give the fish, since it is their waste, converted into nitrates by the bacteria, that feeds the crops. The water circulates in a closed loop, which means you can water your vegetables using up to 90% less water than a traditional vegetable garden.
🚧 The pitfalls of a first system
Beginners come up against five difficulties: a start that is too quick, before the nitrogen cycle is established, water parameters that go unchecked, sources of information that contradict one another, isolation when the first problem appears, and motivation that fades before the first harvest. The 3-month follow-up, the live sessions and the community are designed for those moments. You will also find the most common pitfalls in the article on common mistakes in aquaponics.
🏖️ The system day to day
Once the system is up and running, your upkeep comes down to feeding the fish and checking the water from time to time. The system can cope with up to 15 days of absence, provided that someone close to you calls in to check that the air pump is working, which makes summer departures simpler. In winter, the cool water of the buried tank suits trout, which eat less when the temperature drops, and you then reduce the ration accordingly. The live sessions and the community will guide you through these tasks during the 3 months of follow-up.
🧭 Before you sign up
If aquaponics is still new to you, the Germiponie course covers the basics first, and Tairoponie is the logical next step. The course is taught in French, whether you are in France or abroad, and your enrolment gives you access to the programme videos, the downloadable construction plan, the equipment list, the weekly live sessions and the private community, with 3 months of support. For a first read, the guide to building your own aquaponic system outlines how an installation works, and the article on trout in aquaponics details the needs of this fish.
