The growing system determines how the roots receive water. Vertical towers let the solution trickle down from level to level: the grow tower holds 20, 28 or 44 plants, with a 53 cm footprint diameter and a height of 105 to 195 cm. NFT circulates a film of water a few millimetres deep through channels, with no reservoir under the roots; the 60-plant system takes up 230 × 60 cm with a 64 L reservoir. In DWC and RDWC, the roots are continuously immersed in 19 L pots, suited to large plants.

In aquaponics, grow beds are filled with 8 to 20 mm clay pebbles; the 45 L bed holds 6 to 8 plants, the 80 L bed 12 to 16. All that remains is to choose the net pots: their diameter is measured at the rim, from 3.5 to 14 cm, and must match the hole in the system. The article Grow pots in aquaponics helps you choose them, and the guide Choosing a hydroponic tower compares the towers.
