The summary

  • What you receive: a pump, a tank with a pre-filter and 4 chambers, a clarifier.
  • Which pond it suits: from 6,000 to 38,000 L without fish, a quarter of that figure with koi.
  • What the pre-filter changes: leaves can be removed without opening the filtration chambers.
  • The lamp: from 9 to 60 W depending on the model, and it is what sets the two largest apart.
  • How to choose: the pond's population first, the amount of sunlight second.
  • Connection: 5 m of spiral pipe in 3/4 or 1 inch is supplied with the fittings.

UV clarifier, prefilter and four chambers, up to 38,000 litres without fish

Six models here cover ponds from 6,000 to 38,000 litres without fish. Each includes a submersible pump, a filtration tank with four separate chambers, an ultraviolet clarifier, the filter media, 5 metres of pipe and the fittings. A pre-filter placed at the head of the tank catches coarse debris before the chambers, which spaces out full cleans. The model is then chosen according to your volume and the stock in your pond.

🍂 The pre-filter that catches the leaves

This pre-filter, inspired by external aquarium filters, is installed at the head of the tank and carries a pre-filtration mat. It catches leaves, twigs and coarse waste before they reach the foams and the biological media. The benefit is most noticeable in autumn, when a pond lined with trees receives every day enough debris to clog an ordinary filter: you empty the pre-filter basket in a few seconds and leave the following chambers in place. Full cleans can be spaced out accordingly, and the bacterial colony is not disturbed at every clear-out. Behind it, filter cartridges fill the mechanical chambers and catch the finer particles.

More bio balls for a heavily stocked pond

On a heavily stocked pond, the capacity of the biological chamber sets the fish load that the filter can keep up with. The EHEIM bioballs, the same as those supplied with models 6000 to 12000, slot into this chamber and increase the surface on which nitrifying bacteria settle. You therefore convert more ammonia and nitrite with each pass of the water, which matters most with koi or after the big summer feeds.

With koi, divide the volume by four

Each model has three permissible volumes, and the ratio between the first and the last is constant across the whole range: the permissible volume with koi is a quarter of the volume without fish. The 12000 therefore handles 12,000 litres without fish, 6,000 litres with common fish and 3,000 litres with koi. Start from the line that matches your stock, never from the number printed on the model.

🗄️ Four separate chambers

After the prefilter, the water passes through four separate chambers rather than a single stacked volume. Each chamber has its own function and can be removed independently, which allows maintenance one level at a time: you rinse the first without opening the other three. The three smallest models, from the 6000 to the 12000, receive 60 bioballs in their biological chamber, while the three largest receive 1.6 litres of loose FILTERBIO biological media. This difference in filling follows the size of the tank, which goes from 525 millimetres wide to 750 from the 18000 upwards.

The 6000

Its pump delivers 1,200 litres per hour and its lamp is 9 watts, for 6,000 litres without fish.

The 12000

Its pump delivers 3,200 litres per hour and its lamp is 18 watts, for 12,000 litres without fish.

The 18000

Its pump delivers 4,600 litres per hour and its lamp is 24 watts, for 18,000 litres without fish.

The 38000

Its pump delivers 6,200 litres per hour and its lamp is 60 watts, for 38,000 litres without fish.

💡 Two models, one single pump

The 26000 and 38000 models carry exactly the same pump, a FLOW6500 that delivers 6,200 litres per hour at 70 watts, in the same tank. What sets them apart is the clarifier: its tube is 36 watts on the first and 60 watts on the second. Going from the 26000 to the 38000 therefore increases the treatment power against suspended algae, not the flow rate or the filtration. The choice between the two depends on how much sun your pond gets as much as on its volume, since water in full sun encourages algae more than shaded water.

📏 Three tank sizes

The six models come in three tank formats, which lets you plan the space beside the water. The 6000 fits in a tank measuring 525 x 435 mm and 290 mm high, the 8000 and 12000 in the same base at 380 mm high, the 18000 in a tank measuring 750 x 640 mm and 335 mm high, and the two largest in that base at 435 mm high. The first three models connect with a 3/4 inch fitting, the next three with a 1 inch fitting. The pump changes too: PLAY1500 on the 6000, then FLOW2500, FLOW3500 and FLOW5000, and FLOW6500 on the two largest, with a delivery head that rises from 1.4 to 3.6 metres. The pump cable is 10 metres long and the clarifier cable is 5 metres long.

🌿 Nitrogen and the grow bed

The biological chamber is also what links a pond to a crop. The bacteria in it convert the ammonia from the fish into nitrite, then into nitrate, and this nitrate stays in the water until something consumes it. Plants installed on the filter return play that role and close the cycle, provided that the flow passing through them remains compatible with the pump of the chosen model. A spiral pipe connected to the tank outlet can carry part of the return to a grow bed placed lower than the tank, with the water then flowing back into the pond. The guide to the nitrogen cycle in aquaponics helps you follow these stages by testing.

❄️ The UV-C tube and winter

The clarifier in each kit is a Clear UVC, and its tube wears out while the rest of the unit stays intact. The replacement UV-C bulb for Clear UVC is ordered in the wattage of your model: 9 W for the 6000, 11 W for the 8000 and 18 W for the 12000, then 24, 36 and 60 W for the three largest. The tube should be replaced after 8,000 hours of service, even if it still lights, as its germicidal output has by then dropped considerably. As frost approaches, drain the pump, the clarifier and the tank, clean them and store them under cover, since water trapped in a unit can split it when it freezes. The spring restart is then a bit like a small commissioning, while the bacteria in the biological chamber re-establish themselves.
