This submersible internal filter is installed without tools in an aquarium or a small aquaponic circuit. It circulates, filters and aerates the water, and its flow rate is continuously adjustable. It carries a 24-month warranty.

The range includes four Aquael models: the TURBO MINI (320 L/h, up to 80 L), the PAT MINI (400 L/h, up to 120 L), the TURBO FILTER 500 (500 L/h, up to 150 L) and the TURBO FILTER 1000 (1,000 L/h, from 150 to 250 L).

The summary

  • Which model: TURBO MINI up to 80 L, PAT MINI up to 120 L, TURBO FILTER 500 up to 150 L, TURBO FILTER 1000 up to 250 L.
  • What it does: it circulates, filters and aerates the water, with an adjustable flow rate from 320 to 1,000 L/h.
  • What you receive: the assembled filter, its sponge, its suction-cup mount and its air tube.
  • Maintenance: rinse the sponge in water from the tank when the flow weakens.

A submersible internal filter that circulates, filters and oxygenates your tank.

The Aquael internal filter comes in four models, from the TURBO MINI for up to 80 L to the TURBO FILTER 1000, for tanks of 150 to 250 L. Submersible, it circulates, filters and aerates the water with an adjustable flow rate of 320 to 1,000 L/h. The right choice depends first of all on the actual water volume of the tank.

In an aquarium as in a small aquaponic system, an internal filter performs three functions at once. It keeps the water moving so that no corner stagnates, it traps particles in its foam, and it gives nitrifying bacteria the oxygenated surface they need to convert ammonia into nitrate. Four Aquael models cover tanks from 10 to 250 litres here, with an adjustable flow rate of 320 to 1,000 L/h, and your choice depends first of all on the water volume of the tank.

📏 Four models depending on volume

Start from the real water volume of your tank, with decor and grow medium deducted, which is often 15 to 20% lower than the volume shown on the tank. The two small models filter through a simple foam, and the one in the TURBO MINI is dense enough to hold back shrimp and fry. The two TURBO FILTER models add a filter media chamber, supplied filled with biological ceramic media, which you can top up with activated carbon after a treatment. If your tank is heavily stocked, go for the larger model.

TURBO MINI, up to 80 L

Its dense foam protects shrimp and fry, for a flow rate of 320 L/h.

PAT MINI, up to 120 L

It delivers 400 L/h for a power consumption of 4 W.

TURBO FILTER 500, up to 150 L

A 250 ml chamber filled with ceramic media is added to its foam, for 500 L/h.

TURBO FILTER 1000, from 150 to 250 L

With 1,000 L/h and a 625 ml chamber, it suits a well-stocked tank.

Seeding the sponge of a new filter

On a new tank, add the liquid bacterial activator on the day you set it up. It gives the foam nitrifying bacteria from the outset, instead of waiting for the flora to establish itself. A nitrite drop test then tells you, over the first few weeks, when the biological filtration is in place.

A motor that keeps running underwater

The motor is cooled by the water passing through it: never run it dry. Unplug it before putting your hand in the tank, and leave a loop of cable hanging below the socket.

🌱 In an aquaponic system

The same unit can lift water from the fish tank up to a grow bed. In that case it is the maximum head height that decides: 65 cm for the two small models, 70 cm for the TURBO FILTER 500 and 110 cm for the 1000. At that height, the flow drops to zero. Allowing a third as a safety margin, you should count on about 43 cm of height difference for the small models, 47 cm for the 500 and 73 cm for the 1000. The guide to getting started with an aquaponic system covers the other basics of the circuit.

💨 Aeration via the water outlet

Each model has an air tube connected to the water outlet: the current leaving the pump head draws air in through this tube and mixes it with the water as fine bubbles, following the venturi principle. You can therefore aerate your tank without a separate air pump, and the air intake adjustment sets the quantity of bubbles. Point the outlet towards the surface so that it creates a gentle movement, which promotes gas exchange, and reduce the air intake at night if the sound of the bubbles bothers you in a bedroom.

Which internal filter for your tank?

Four Aquael filters built on the same principle. What sets them apart is the tank volume, the fineness of the sponge and the room for filter media.
