This black mesh pot holds the plant by the rim in soilless culture, with the roots descending through the slots into the nutrient solution. It is available in 5 cm and 6.5 cm diameter — choose according to the hole size in your support.
The summary
- What you receive: 10, 25, 50, or 100 slotted baskets in the diameter of your choice.
- Which diameter: 5 cm for seedlings and short-cycle salad crops, 6.5 cm for an established plug or a plant purchased in a module.
- Where they fit: NFT, DWC, raft, jar lid, any drilled support that holds the rim.
- Before ordering: measure the hole in your support — that is what determines the diameter.
Slotted pots for NFT, DWC and raft systems, in packs of 10, 25, 50 or 100
The slotted basket holds the plant cantilevered over the edge of the tank or lid, allows roots to pass through its slits into the water film, and blocks the hole through which light would otherwise enter. This third function determines how clean the system stays, because light falling on a nutrient solution produces algae within two to three weeks. Make sure you also block any unused spaces in your support, using an empty basket filled with clay pebbles, exactly as you would for an occupied space.
📏 Choosing the diameter
Choosing the right diameter comes down to two measurements. First, the mature size of the plant: a basket that is too narrow will constrict the crown of a full-grown lettuce, and what matters here is root geometry, a fine, fibrous root system will fit where a taproot hits the bottom. Second, the hole in your support, and that is the deciding factor: the basket rests on its rim, so the rim must not pass through the hole while the body does. Take a ruler, measure both, and you will know exactly which diameter to order.
🪨 Filling the basket
Rockwool
The 36 mm cube fits the 5 cm slot and holds the seedling upright from germination. It can be handled without breaking the root.
Clay pebbles
They give roots plenty of air, rinse clean, and can be reused. They retain little water if your pump stops.
Germination sponge
It retains moisture for longer and fits straight into the basket. It is practical for small batches.
Coco fibre
It is poorly suited to a basket through which the current flows, as the fine particles migrate and end up in the pump.
The cube to get started, the clay pebbles to anchor
At the same time, choose rockwool cubes for starting seedlings and clay pebbles to support and aerate around them. The cube holds the seedling upright from germination, and the pebbles allow plenty of air to reach the roots. Allow one pot per position plus a small spare, since a broken pot puts a space out of action. Choosing your grow medium is a decision made at the same point.
The basket that doesn't touch the water
The most common mistake when starting out is placing the basket without checking that the growing medium actually reaches the water film. A young plant does not yet have roots long enough to pass through the basket, and it will dry out within 48 hours if nothing bridges the gap. Push the rockwool cube right to the bottom of the basket, and maintain a water level that keeps this base moist during your first few days of growing, you can lower it afterwards to allow air to reach the roots.
The question of quantity should be settled before that of diameter, as it determines which pack size to choose. Count one basket per slot in your support, then add around 10% to your order as a buffer, since a basket can crack when removing a root ball or go missing during cleaning. A pack of 100 works out significantly cheaper per unit than a pack of 10, and these baskets do not deteriorate over time, so buying ahead in bulk makes sense. Don't forget the empty slots, which also need a blanking basket.
♻️ Clean and reuse
A basket will last several seasons provided it is cleaned between crops. Remove the entire root ball rather than pulling on roots caught in the slots, leave it to soak overnight in clean water, then brush off the brown film that forms on the plastic. This biofilm is not harmful in itself, but it harbours spores and pest eggs from one crop to the next. A rinse with diluted white vinegar is sufficient in most cases; a stronger disinfectant should be reserved for the aftermath of a pythium attack or seedling damping-off.
🌱 The limits of the basket
A basket is not a pot, and this confusion costs many beginners several crops. It retains neither water nor nutrients, since its purpose is precisely to let both pass through freely, meaning a plant placed in a basket outside a circulating system will dry out within a few hours. It also cannot support a tall plant at full maturity, a tomato plant loaded with fruit requires an independent stake fixed to the structure. Think of it as the interface between your plants and your system, not as a growing container.
