Manual seeder
This hand seeder drops the seeds one at a time, thanks to a rotating lid graduated from 0 to 5: 0 closes the reservoir, and 1 to 5 set the opening to suit the size of the seed. It prevents over-dense sowing, whether in a pod, in a tray cell or in a row in the vegetable garden.
The summary
- What it is: a hand seeder, with a round reservoir and a lid graduated from 0 to 5.
- The setting: position 0 closes the reservoir, positions 1 to 5 open an ever wider opening.
- The action: you tilt the tool and tap the handle, and the seeds come out one by one.
- What it prevents: overly dense sowing, and the thinning out that follows.
Lid graduated from 0 to 5, for placing seeds one by one
This hand-held seeder with a lid graduated from 0 to 5 is used to drop seeds one by one into pods, tray cells or rows in the vegetable garden. Position 0 closes the reservoir, while positions 1 to 5 widen the opening according to the size of the seed. This avoids sowing too thickly and the thinning out that follows.
This hand seeder consists of a small round reservoir, closed by a transparent rotating lid, and a grooved chute through which the seeds come out. The lid is marked with a scale from 0 to 5: position 0 closes the reservoir, and positions 1 to 5 open an ever wider opening, which you choose according to the size of your seeds.
⚙️ How it distributes
The principle relies on gravity and on gentle shaking. You pour the seeds into the reservoir, close the lid, then turn it to the number that lets through one seed at a time. As you tilt the tool, the seeds make their way to the chute and line up there, and a few taps of your finger on the handle move them forward one by one to the edge. The pace is therefore set by your hand and not by a mechanism, which keeps the movement precise whether you are sowing a row or a single cell. Once sowing is finished, position 0 keeps the remaining seeds shut inside the reservoir until the next session.
Position 0
The reservoir is closed, and you can store the seeder with its seeds without losing any.
Positions 1 and 2
The narrowest openings are for fine seeds, the ones you cannot pick up between two fingers.
Positions 3 to 5
The wider openings let larger seeds out one at a time, without blocking the chute.
🌰 Finding the right setting
The graduation does not correspond to any particular species, because two varieties of the same plant do not always have the same seed size. The setting is therefore found by a test of a few seconds over a sheet of white paper: if the seeds come out two or three at a time, move down a number, and if nothing comes out despite tapping, move up a number. Then write the chosen number on the packet, which saves you repeating the test next season. The benefit is clearest with fine seeds, such as those of a Batavia lettuce: sown broadcast, they come out in clumps, and you then have to pull out most of the seedlings to make room for the others.
A dry seeder for sinking seeds
Always fill the hopper with dry seeds, in a perfectly dry tool. A damp seed sticks to the wall of the chute, holds back its neighbours and ends up coming out in a clump, which defeats the purpose of the setting. After washing, let the seeder air-dry before filling it, and empty the hopper back into its original packet between varieties so they do not get mixed.
One seed per germination pod
To start plants intended for a tower or a grow bed, hold the seeder above the peat sponge germination pods and drop 1 or 2 seeds into the central hole of each. The pod keeps moisture around the seed during germination, then is transplanted whole into a basket, with no potting compost to disperse into the water. You end up with uniform plugs, all at the same stage on the same day.
🌱 Seedlings for an aquaponic system
In aquaponics, young plants are started outside the system, because the fish water must not receive potting compost and a bare seed gets lost in it. So you sow in pods or in a cell germination tray, then transplant the rooted plugs into the baskets or between the clay pebbles. Regular sowing gives plants of the same size, so that a whole level of a tower or a whole row of a bed is filled in one go. The stages of the season, from germination temperature to transplanting, are detailed in the guide to succeeding with spring seedlings in aquaponics.
