Hydroponic propagator for 27 or 72 cuttings, no consumables required
The Terra Aquatica cloning machine roots cuttings without soil or pots, the stems held in split neoprene discs. It comes in two sizes: 27 sites on a 13 L reservoir whose water is circulated by an air pump, or 72 in aeroponics, sprayed by a rotating head above a 70 L reservoir.
The discs can be rinsed and reused batch after batch, with no grow medium or consumables to buy again.
The summary
- What it is: a propagator that roots cuttings without soil or pots — the stem held in place by a split neoprene disc, with the base in contact with constantly refreshed water.
- Two sizes, two principles: 27 sites on a 13 L grow bed oxygenated by an air pump, or 72 sites using aeroponics, watered by a rotating head above a 70 L grow bed.
- No consumables: the neoprene discs can be washed and reused, batch after batch. No rockwool cubes to replace.
- The timescale: 10 to 14 days on the 72-site model, 14 to 21 days on the 27-site model, with easy species and water around 20 degrees.
- What you add: a rooting hormone for woody cuttings, gentle lighting, and heat if your room is cool.
- Footprint: 67 x 29 x 15 cm and 2.86 kg for the 27-site model, 67 x 67 x 32 cm and 11.8 kg for the 72-site model.
Rooting without soil or consumables: 27 positions in oxygenated water, or 72 in aeroponics
A cutting must form roots before it dries out, and for that it needs constant water and oxygen around its base. The two cutting propagators offered here give you two answers to that need: the model 27 through the constant movement of the water, the model 72 through a rotating mist above an open space.
💨 The oxygenated tank, 27 cuttings
A 4 W air pump injects air into the 13 L tank through two lines. The water never stagnates and stays circulated and oxygenated, in constant contact with the stems held by your discs. There is no grow medium, so nothing that can suffocate or rot, and nothing to buy again with each batch. This is the principle of bubbler cloners, simple and forgiving of oversights. A power cut of a few hours has no consequence for your cuttings, as the cut ends stay immersed in the 13 litres, which clearly sets this model apart from the 72. So there is only one thing to keep an eye on with this tank, the steady bubbling of the two lines, and a clogged air pipe can be rinsed with clear water in a few seconds. Place the pump above the level of the tank, otherwise a power cut may cause water to flow back up the air pipe to it.
The tank
It holds 13 L, with its lid pierced with 27 slots. The volume is enough to limit swings in the water temperature.
The pump
It is a 4 W air pump delivering 3.5 litres of air per minute, with two distribution lines. It runs continuously.
The discs
There are 27 soft neoprene discs of 5 cm. You slip the stem in through a slit, and they can be rinsed and reused.
On the 72 model
The tank goes up to 70 L, the positions to 72, and the air pump gives way to a 12 V motor that drives a spray head.
🌀 The rotating head, 72 cuttings
In the centre of the large tank, a 12-volt low-voltage motor drives a spray head that throws the solution out as it rotates. The rotation solves a specific problem: with 72 positions arranged in a circle, fixed nozzles would water unevenly, the nearest ones too much and the furthest ones not enough. As it turns, a single head covers all 72 positions equally. Your cutting bases then stay in air saturated with moisture instead of sitting in water, a set-up that speeds up root formation markedly compared with bubbling. The 13 W motor runs on 12 volts behind a transformer, so no dangerous voltage comes into contact with the water.
A disinfected tank and water below 20 °C
Biofilm is a slimy bacterial deposit that forms on the walls and on the stems, and that makes the cut bases rot. Start each batch in a disinfected tray with clean water, and keep your water below 20 degrees. Beyond that, bacterial growth becomes faster than root formation.
What comes after the cloner
Your rooted cuttings are waiting for a growing system. An aeroponic pot with 5 cm baskets takes a neoprene disc directly, and the cuttings from the 72 model can be transplanted into the 8 cm baskets of the GrowStream gutters.
⚡ The trade-off of the 72 model
This speed comes at the price of a dependence on misting. A bare cutting base, with no grow medium or water around it, dries out in 1 to 2 hours if the head stops. The unit is designed for continuous operation, day and night, and a quick glance at the rotation each time you pass is the most useful maintenance habit for this equipment. Provide a reliable socket, not an overloaded extension lead, and check that the head turns freely, as a deposit on its axis is enough to slow it down. The 27 model, for its part, tolerates the unexpected, which makes it the sensible choice for your first batch, while the 72 will serve you if you run batch after batch and already know your species.
⚪ The neoprene discs
A neoprene disc can be rinsed and reused, run after run, whereas a rockwool cube stays attached to the plant it has supported. It holds your stem without squeezing it, lets the crown through, and adds no organic matter to the water: nothing that could ferment. You can therefore start a new run with the same set of discs. Between runs, a wash in hot soapy water followed by a thorough rinse is enough, as neoprene copes poorly with concentrated bleach, which ends up hardening it. This way you will keep the same set for several seasons, and a split disc can be replaced without touching the rest: the 5 cm neoprene discs are also sold separately.
💡 Heat, light and hormone
Three things affect your success rate and are chosen alongside the cloner. The first is a rooting hormone, gel or powder, in which to dip the cutting. Next comes soft lighting, as a cutting needs light but cannot cope with strong intensity. The third is a stable temperature, around 20 degrees in the water, which a heat mat provides in a cool room. Our article on the indoor seedling space covers the same need for seeds. The quality of the cut matters as much as these three settings: a clean section made with a scalpel just below a node heals much faster than a stem crushed with secateurs.
📅 The recovery time
Allow 10 to 14 days for your cuttings on the 72 model and 14 to 21 days on the 27, with easy species and water at around 20 degrees. The timing depends far more on the species, the quality of the cut and the water temperature than on the equipment: mint roots in a week, rosemary takes twice as long. Watch the base of the stem rather than the calendar, as the white dot of the callus appears before the roots. After 3 weeks with nothing happening, remove the stem, as it generally will not root any more and its tissue feeds the biofilm. Always take a few more cuttings than the number of plants you are aiming for, since an extra slot costs you nothing and woody species take less readily than herbaceous ones.
