Biodegradable peat pots for seedlings, pack of 20
This set contains 20 round peat pots of 6 × 6 cm, for seedlings, cuttings and young plants destined for the garden, the window box or the greenhouse.
You sow in the pot, then bury it whole: the roots pass through the wall as it breaks down, and the plant is never knocked out of its pot.
The summary
- What you receive: 20 round peat pots, 6 × 6 cm.
- What they spare you: pot removal, and the root shock that goes with it.
- How to use them: you bury the whole pot, base torn open, with its plant.
- Where they go: in open ground or in a planter, watered by hand.
20 peat pots of 6 cm, which are planted in the ground with the seedling
This set of 20 biodegradable peat pots, each 6 × 6 cm, is used to sow and then bury the plant along with its pot, with no need for pricking out. The roots grow through the wall as it breaks down, which avoids root shock, particularly for cucumbers and squashes. Simply tear off the bottom before burying the pot.
The set contains 20 round pots measuring 6 × 6 cm, made of pressed peat, an organic material that breaks down in the soil. You sow in them, then bury the whole pot along with its seedling, so the root ball is never touched.
🥕 Transplanting without repotting
Taking a young plant out of its pot often damages its finest rootlets, which stay stuck to the plastic, and the root ball splits along the way. With a peat pot, this step disappears: you dig, you place, you backfill, and the roots pass through the wall as it breaks down. The gain is clear for species that dislike transplanting, such as cucumbers and squashes, and for herbs whose roots you do not want to disturb. The structure of the pot also lets water and air circulate throughout the seedling stage.
🌍 What becomes of it in the soil
The pot breaks down in place and joins the organic matter in the soil: nothing to remove, nothing to throw away, no plastic pot to store from one season to the next. So that the roots reach the soil without waiting for this decomposition to finish, tear or pierce the bottom of the pot at planting time, without disturbing the root ball. The most advanced roots, often already visible through the wall, then pass straight into the garden soil.
Before you reach that point, fill the pots with a light seed compost, water, sow, then place them close together in a tray, somewhere bright and sheltered. Keep the compost moist throughout germination, and tip out any water standing at the bottom of the tray after watering, because roots that sit in water permanently suffocate. The 20 pots fit on a corner of a table and move as one when you need to follow the light through the day.
A light potting compost to fill the pots
Fill these pots with a light seed compost, and nothing richer: a young root burns on an over-fertilised medium. Lightened with a little vermiculite, it holds moisture between waterings until planting out.
The overhanging edge, and the water circuit
Bury the pot completely, or cut its rim off at ground level: a peat rim left exposed to the air dries out, then draws water out of the root ball and slows decomposition. These pots also have no place in a flood-and-drain bed or an immersed basket, where the peat breaks down and heads for the strainer. For a seedling destined for a water circuit, what you need are germination pods or mineral wool cubes.
🌤️ Before planting out
Plants raised under cover need a hardening-off phase before going out into the garden. Put them outside in their pots about 2 weeks before planting, at first for a few hours in the afternoon, in shade and out of the wind, then bring them back in before the evening chill. Lengthen the time outdoors and the exposure to sun each day: by the end of the 2 weeks, the plants stay out in full sun, unless frost is forecast. The peat pot makes these comings and goings easier, since you move the whole tray without ever touching the roots.
