The Princess Abby of Ten-Mile Creek lotus is a small lotus bred in Louisiana, designed for patios, balconies and the edge of a small pond. It reaches 30 to 50 cm and is grown in a round 20-litre pot, in full sun. From June to August, it bears flowers of 5 to 10 cm, cream with bright pink tips.
Princess Abby of Ten-Mile Creek is a small lotus bred in Louisiana, in the United States, and reputed to be very free-flowering. Its single flowers of 5 to 10 cm open creamy white at the centre, with bright pink petal tips, above foliage of 10 to 15 cm. The plant reaches 30 to 50 cm above the water, which makes it suited to a patio pot, a balcony tub or the edge of a small pond.
🎨 A cream and pink flower
The flower opens as a flared cup, so its golden heart is visible from the very first morning. The bright pink is concentrated at the tips of the petals, while their base keeps a cream tint; over the days the flower is open, this pink softens and shifts towards a tender pink. Two flowers opened a few days apart therefore do not show quite the same shade on a single plant, which you will notice above all from June to August, during flowering.

🪴 A round 20-litre pot
For its first season, this lotus should be planted in a round pot of at least 20 litres, solid-sided with no drainage holes, filled with a clay-rich soil to a depth of at least 15 cm. Lay the rhizome flat on the soil, then hold it down with a stone or a handful of soil so that it does not float when the pot is filled with water; it can also be covered by a few centimetres of soil. The water then covers the soil to a depth of 10 to 20 cm, and the pot goes in full sun. Growth starts once the water reaches 20 °C, which puts the real start somewhere between late spring and early summer, depending on your region.
Feed the soil in a 20-litre pot
A 20-litre pot holds little soil, and a plant this free-flowering exhausts it in a single season. The aquatic plant fertiliser comes as slow-release tablets, which you push into the soil of the pot rather than scattering them in the water. Allow 6 tablets for this small lotus, the low end of the recommended range for one plant, placed at planting and again each spring in the following years. The nutrients then stay in contact with the roots instead of feeding the algae in open water.
Keep the tip of the rhizome intact
A lotus rhizome is fragile at the nodes, and its growing tip carries the whole season to come. If this end breaks when unpacking or planting, the rhizome will not restart. Take it out of its damp paper with both hands, without bending it, and plant it without letting it dry out.
✂️ Divide every year in March
In a 20-litre container, the rhizome fills the whole volume within a season, so it needs dividing every year in March, before growth starts. Turn the pot over to slide the root ball out, then free the chain of tubers without breaking it. Make the cut 3 or 4 cm from a node, and keep the chain of 2 or 3 tubers at the end, the one carrying the growing tip. If you would rather space these divisions out, transfer the whole root ball to a wider round tub after the first season.
🌱 In a settling tank
In an aquaponics system, this small size fits into a settling tank placed upstream of the return to the fish pond, where the water arrives most heavily loaded. The roots take up some of the nitrates and phosphates that come from fish waste and uneaten feed. Because the system water already supplies nitrogen, this tank does without fertiliser tablets: an input that dissolves into the shared water changes what your tests measure.
