Lotus Chongban Bayi Lian
This miniature lotus with double pink flowers, with deeper-coloured petal tips, flowers for longer than other small lotuses. It reaches 50 to 60 cm above the water and starts off in a 20-litre pot.
The rhizome is shipped between 1 April and 15 June, at planting time. An order placed outside this period is recorded as a pre-order for the following season.
The summary
- The flowering season: longer than that of other miniature lotuses.
- The size: 50 to 60 cm above water, with leaves of 10 to 15 cm.
- The flower: double, pink with a yellow base, 5 to 10 cm across.
- The container: 20 litres in the first year, 150 litres thereafter.
Miniature lotus with double pink flowers, long flowering season, 20-litre pot
The Lotus Chongban Bayi Lian is a miniature bowl-type lotus, bred for pot cultivation, with pink double flowers of 5 to 10 cm with a yellow base. It stands out for a flowering period that covers more of the summer than other miniature lotuses. It reaches 50 to 60 cm above the water and starts off in a 20 litre pot.
Chongban Bayi Lian is a miniature bowl-type lotus, that is, one selected for pot culture, with double flowers of 5 to 10 cm. The plant stands 50 to 60 cm above the water, with fine foliage of 10 to 15 cm, so it looks distinctly taller than it is wide.
🌸 A double pink flower
The petals are a pale pink that deepens towards the tip, and their base brightens to yellow around the centre. The flower is double: its many petals overlap and partly hide the receptacle, whereas a single flower shows the centre as soon as it opens. This yellow at the base explains why the variety is sometimes classed among the yellow lotuses, even though the dominant colour remains pink. The flowers are carried well above the foliage, which lets you see them from a distance despite their small size.
🌺 A long flowering season
Its flowering covers a longer period than that of the other miniature lotus. On a lotus, this duration is not seen in a single flower but in their succession: each flower lasts a few days, then another flower stalk forms and takes over. The growing season of a potted lotus lasts about 140 to 150 days, from the spring start to the disappearance of the foliage, and flowering takes up only part of it, after the upright leaves have established. In a pot of the same size, you therefore get flowers over a larger part of the summer.
Cut the pod as soon as the petals fall
Cut the flower stalk with its receptacle as soon as the petals have fallen, unless you want to keep a decorative seed pod. A pod left on the plant eventually tips into the water, and in a pond where fish live, its decomposition loads the water with organic matter. On a plant that flowers for so long, the task comes round often and quickly becomes a habit.
A slow-release fertiliser for a long flowering season
Flowering that stretches across the summer calls for feed available throughout the season, not a one-off application. The Osmocote tablets for water lilies and lotuses meet this need: pushed into the soil of the pot at planting, at a rate of 6 to 9 per plant, they release their nutrients gradually until autumn. You renew the application each spring, without adding anything to the water.
This flowering is prepared from planting: you spend the first season in a 20-litre pot, round and deep, filled with fine loamy soil and finished with 1 or 2 cm of pozzolana. The rhizome is laid flat, tips towards the centre, under 2 to 3 cm of soil, and it should be handled with care, as it is fragile at the internodes. The pot is then set under 10 to 20 cm of water, in full sun, on a balcony, a terrace or a pond shelf.
🪣 20 litres, then 150 litres
From the second year, two approaches are possible. The plant goes into a lotus tub of about 150 litres, or else the rhizome is divided in March to start again in a new 20-litre pot, which keeps it at a manageable size. A 150-litre tub filled with wet soil can no longer be moved once in place, so it is set in its final position before being filled. You also need to plan for the water depth above the soil, 10 to 20 cm, which requires a pond deep enough or a support to raise the tub, as with the other marginal aquatic plants.
🗓️ The season month by month
The rhizome stays dormant while the water is cold, and growth starts once it reaches about 20 °C. The first leaves float flat on the surface, the upright leaves follow, and then the flower stalks come one after another through the summer. In autumn the foliage turns yellow: cut the leaves back to the rim of the pot rather than leaving them to rot in the water, especially in a pond connected to growing beds, as explained in the article on lotus in aquaponics. The rhizome then spends the winter dormant under the water, and nothing needs to be brought indoors or protected, except for a pot standing above ground, where the small volume of water can freeze solid.
