Fei Hong, also sold under the name Scarlet Lady, is a small hardy lotus with a bright red flower of 10 to 15 cm. The plant stands 30 to 50 cm above the water, on leaves of 12 to 15 cm, and you receive it as a bare rhizome, to be planted in spring in a pot of heavy soil.
🔴 A bold red in a compact size
The flower opens from June to August and keeps a deep red, with no pastel shading, right to the centre, where the yellow receptacle is surrounded by pinkish stamens. As the foliage does not exceed 15 cm in diameter, the flower stands well clear above the leaves, which lets you look at this lotus up close, on a terrace or at the edge of a small pond. This reduced size takes nothing away from its hardiness, since the rhizome withstands the cold as well as a hardy water lily. It does, however, need at least 6 hours of direct sun a day for you to see buds.

6 to 9 tablets at planting
A 20-litre pot holds little soil, and its reserves are not enough to support a full flowering in the first year. At planting, push 6 to 9 tablets of aquatic plant fertiliser about 2 cm into the soil around the rhizome. These tablets release slowly throughout the season, so a single application per year is enough, renewed each spring, without adding anything to the pond water.
🪣 A 20-litre pot to begin with
In the first season, the rhizome settles into a container of at least 20 litres, filled with heavy garden soil, preferably clayey and cleared of stones. Garden-centre compost is not suitable, because it is too light: it floats when the pot is submerged and clouds the pond. You then place the pot so that 15 to 20 cm of water covers the surface of the soil, propping it on a brick if the pond is deeper, as with the other aquatic plants for the margins. The following year, once the rhizome has filled the pot, you divide it in spring or move the whole rootball into a container of about 150 litres.
A pot standing above ground freezes right through
A bowl or small tub standing on a patio freezes solid right through during hard frosts, whereas the bottom of a dug pond stays free of ice. Before winter, therefore, place the pot at the bottom of a pond, sink it into the ground up to the rim, or bring it into a frost-free room, keeping the soil saturated with water. A rhizome caught in ice will not regrow in spring.
🌱 In aquaponics, a separate tub
In a system where fish and plants share the same water, the lotus is always grown in its own container, never in open soil. A small cultivar like this one fits easily into a settling pond placed upstream of the return to the fish, where its roots absorb some of the nitrates and phosphates from waste and feed. 📦 From the parcel to the first leaf
The rhizome is shipped bare-root between 1 April and 15 June, cleaned and then wrapped in damp paper inside a plastic bag, so that it does not dry out in transit. On arrival, lay it flat on the firmed soil in the pot, growing tips pointing towards the centre, then cover it with 2 to 3 cm of soil, leaving the tips just showing. A layer of pozzolana holds the soil in place, and you wait 3 to 4 days before putting the pot into the water. The first leaves float flat on the water, and the upright leaves follow.
