Medium-sized lotus with a cream flower and pinkish tips, early flowering
The Green Maiden lotus is a medium-sized hardy lotus, rising 60 to 80 cm above the water. Its almost double flower, creamy white with green highlights and pink tips, opens early in the season, from June, and sometimes carries two flowers on a single stem. It lasts 2 to 3 years in a 20 litre pot.
Green Maiden is a medium-sized lotus, 60 to 80 cm above the water, whose semi-double flower, creamy white with green highlights, keeps pinkish petal tips. It flowers early in the season and sometimes bears two flowers on a single stalk, a peculiarity of this cultivar.
🍏 A cream flower with green highlights
Depending on the light, the flower looks cream, very pale yellow or slightly green, and it is this shade that gave the variety its name. The numerous pointed petals open into a star around a yellow receptacle ringed with golden stamens, while their tips keep a pink edging that is clearly visible up close. You will therefore find this lotus classed sometimes among the yellows, sometimes among the pinks, when it is in fact one and the same flower, 10 to 15 cm across.
The colour
It is creamy white with a green sheen, and rosy tips on the petals.
The corolla
It is almost double and measures 10 to 15 cm when fully open.
The leaf
It forms a parasol 20 to 30 cm across, held up above the water.
The season
It runs from June to August, with an earlier start than average.
Place the tablets before the early flowering
This lotus flowers early, from June, so the soil in its pot must be fed before the first buds. In an ornamental pond, push 6 to 9 tablets of aquatic plant fertiliser into the soil around the rhizome, about 2 cm away, at planting and then every spring. This single annual application releases slowly until the end of summer and supports the whole flowering period, without releasing anything into the open water of the pond.
🌸 Two flowers on one stem
This cultivar sometimes produces two buds on a single flower stalk, which open one after the other. The phenomenon is not systematic and cannot be induced: it appears on well-established plants, in full season, so a first year without a double stalk is still normal. When it happens, let both flowers run their course, because they do not interfere with each other and extend the flowering on the same stem. As this lotus also starts earlier than average, a well-established plant bears its first flowers from early June and keeps producing them until August.
To get these well-established plants, the rhizome is planted in a 20-litre pot of heavy garden soil, which it occupies without difficulty for 2 to 3 years. You place the pot under 15 to 20 cm of water, measured from the surface of the soil, in a spot that receives at least 6 hours of direct sun. When the pot is full, you divide the rhizome in spring or move the root ball into a tub of about 150 litres.
🧪 In aquaponics, little fertiliser
Connected to an aquaponic circuit, the Green Maiden almost never needs fertiliser, since the water already supplies it with nitrogen from the fish waste. Fertiliser tablets are therefore reserved for pots kept outside the circuit, because a mineral input released into shared water skews your readings. Pale foliage is first diagnosed by checking pH and iron, with an iron drop test, before any feeding. The guide to lotus in aquaponics details the plant's role in the nitrogen cycle.
📦 A spring rhizome
The rhizome is sent bare-rooted, without leaves, between 1 April and 15 June, wrapped in damp paper inside a plastic bag, because it is before the leaves develop that it can be moved without harm. On arrival, lay it flat on the firmed soil, cover it with 2 to 3 cm leaving the growing tips just showing, then wait 3 to 4 days before filling the container. A layer of pozzolana holds the soil in place. The seasonal calendar reminds you when to act, and the aquatic plants collection brings together taller or more compact plants.
