Lotus Pink-a-licious
This tall lotus bears a single bright pink flower 15 to 30 cm across, held above leaves 50 to 60 cm wide. The plant reaches 1.20 to 1.80 m and is grown in a pot in a pond, in full sun.
The rhizome is dispatched bare and dormant, from 1 April to 15 June. An order placed outside this period is sent when the following season opens.
The summary
- The flower: bright pink, single, 15 to 30 cm across depending on the age of the plant.
- The size: 1.20 to 1.80 m of upright foliage above the water.
- The container: 20 L the first season, then a pot 50 cm wide, under 20 to 30 cm of water.
- After flowering: large seed pods and an abundant crop of tubers.
Large lotus with a single bright pink flower, for ponds and large containers
The Pink-a-licious Lotus is an aquatic plant for a pond or large tub, which bears a single bright pink flower, 15 to 30 cm across, from June to August. Its upright foliage rises to 1.20 to 1.80 m. It starts off in 20 L in the first season, then needs a pot 50 cm wide under 20 to 30 cm of water.
Pink-a-licious bears a large, bright pink, single-petalled flower, held high above foliage 50 to 60 cm wide. The rhizome arrives bare and dormant, and you plant it in spring in a pot of heavy soil. Once established, the plant rises 1.20 to 1.80 m above the surface, a range that depends mainly on the volume you give it.
The width
The final pot is at least 50 cm in diameter, because the rhizome runs horizontally.
The depth
It takes 30 to 45 cm of soil, then 20 to 30 cm of water above.
The height achieved
At this volume, the foliage reaches 1.50 to 1.80 m above the water.
🌷 The diameter of the flower
The flower opens to between 15 and 30 cm, with fewer than 20 petals, which classes it among the single flowers: the cup opens wide and shows the centre. A young plant produces its first flowers at the lower end of this range, and the size increases with the age of the rhizome and the room available to it. You should therefore judge this lotus on its second or third season rather than the first, once the rhizome has built up its reserves beneath the soil.
Flowering covers June, July and August. The flowers come in succession on independent stems, each rising out of the water in turn, and the plant stays full as long as the soil feeds it. This sustained rhythm comes at the expense of the rhizome's volume, which grows quickly under the soil and fills the pot sooner than that of a less vigorous lotus. This behaviour explains the choice of container, which should be reasoned over 2 or 3 seasons and not just the first year.
🧱 Enlarging the pot as the seasons go by
In the first spring, a 20 L pot is enough for the rhizome to settle in, put out its leaves and produce its first flowers. From the second season, a lotus reaching 1.20 m or more needs more soil: you then divide the rhizome to replant a section, or you move the whole root ball into a round pot 50 cm wide, or even a container of about 150 L. It is in this large volume that the plant reaches the top of its range and the flowers attain their greatest diameter.
One application of fertiliser in spring
A plant that reaches 1.80 m drains the soil in its pot in a single season. The fertiliser for aquatic plants comes as slow-release pellets that you push into the soil, away from open water, at a rate of 6 to 9 pellets per plant, the top of the range in a 50 cm pot. Place them at planting, then just once each spring. Without this feed, the foliage still appears but the buds become scarce from midsummer onwards.
💗 A bright pink held high
The pink of this variety is a vivid pink, and it can be seen from a distance because the flower is carried well above the leaves. This height changes the way you position the plant: a lotus of this size is meant to be looked at from afar, from a terrace or a window, whereas a bowl lotus is looked at close up. In a pond where fish live, its upright foliage shades the water, and the article on lotuses in aquaponics advises not letting the leaves cover more than 30% of the surface. You will find both scales in the aquatic plants section.
🥥 The seed pod after flowering
When the petals fall, the receptacle is left alone on its stalk and swells into a large pod pierced with cavities. This variety produces handsome ones, and above all it produces plenty of tubers beneath the soil. The pot therefore fills faster than that of an ordinary lotus, and division comes sooner, between March and the end of April, during dormancy. You can leave a few pods to dry on the plant for their autumn silhouette and cut the others at the base.
📬 The parcel and planting
The rhizome travels bare, dormant, before any leaf has emerged: it is cleaned, wrapped in damp paper and sealed in a bag that keeps it fresh during transport. Plant it as soon as it arrives, laid flat on firmed soil with the growing tips towards the centre, and cover it with 2 to 3 cm of soil at most, leaving the tips just showing. Buried deeper, it gets off to a poor start and risks rotting before its first floating leaf. Wait 3 to 4 days before adding water, then flood gradually.
