The Feng Wu lotus 凤舞 is a hardy lotus of 50 to 60 cm, with single, pinkish-white flowers that rise above low-held foliage. It can be grown for 2 to 3 years in a 20-litre pot, at the edge of a pond or on a terrace in full sun.
Shipped as a bare rhizome from 1 April to 15 June only. An order placed outside this period is recorded as a pre-order and ships at the start of the following season.

Hardy pinkish-white lotus of 50 to 60 cm, flowers held above the foliage
The hardy Feng Wu 凤舞 lotus suits pond edges and sunny terraces. It reaches 50 to 60 cm, and its single, pinkish-white flowers, 10 to 15 cm across, open from June to August above compact, low-growing foliage. It can be grown for 2 to 3 years in a 20-litre pot, under 15 to 20 cm of water.
Feng Wu 凤舞 bears a single pinkish-white flower with pink petal tips, 10 to 15 cm across, on a plant that stands 50 to 60 cm tall. Its Chinese name means "dance of the phoenix", and it describes the habit rather than the colour: the leaves stay low and the flowers rise above them instead of getting lost in the foliage.
The height
The plant reaches 50 to 60 cm above the surface, leaves included.
The leaf
It forms a parasol of 20 to 30 cm, upright but kept low on its stalk.
The flower
It is pinkish white, single, 10 to 15 cm across, held above the foliage.
The season
It runs from June to August, on a plant that has been established for at least one season.
🪶 Leaves held low
In many lotuses, the foliage reaches the same height as the flower stalks, and the flowers can only just be made out among the parasols. Here, the leaf stalks stay short and the flower stalk of each bloom rises above them, so that the flower stands out against the green background instead of hiding in it. This habit means you need to think about where you will put the pot before you even plant it, since a plant of this shape is best viewed from the front and from fairly close, ideally from a bank or a terrace.
Replace the tablets every spring
This small lotus stays 2 to 3 seasons in the same 20-litre pot, and soil in such a small volume becomes depleted from one year to the next. Push 6 to 9 tablets of aquatic plant fertiliser into the soil around the rhizome, at a depth of about 2 cm, at planting and then every spring. This single application is released slowly throughout the season, and it is what allows the pot to flower again in the third year instead of producing only leaves.
🎯 Where to place the pot
A lotus whose flowers rise above low foliage deserves to be seen up close. Place your pot at the edge of the pond, on a submerged ledge or a brick that raises it, rather than in the middle of a large stretch of water where a height of 60 cm gets lost in the landscape. The water should cover the soil by 15 to 20 cm, and the spot must receive at least 6 hours of direct sun a day, without which the plant produces leaves but no buds.
This position at the edge has a practical consequence on the day you want to take the pot out. A container placed within easy reach can be lifted out without stepping into the water and without stirring up the sludge on the bottom, which avoids clouding a pond whose water takes several days to clear again. The other formats in the aquatic plants collection are positioned on the same principle, the tallest at the back and the lowest at the front.
🐟 With fish in the water
The Feng Wu shares a stocked pond or an aquaponic installation without difficulty, provided its rhizome stays protected in its pot. With koi carp, which root around on the bottom, a mesh planting basket stops the soil being turned over, while goldfish pose no threat to a well-buried rhizome. Sturgeon and very large carp, on the other hand, are best avoided in the same volume, as they routinely overturn the grow medium in the pots. The guide to lotus and fish in aquaponics sets out these pairings species by species.
📦 From April to the first leaf
The rhizome arrives bare and dormant, between 1 April and 15 June, wrapped in damp paper inside a plastic bag. Lay it flat in firmed-down soil, covered by 2 to 3 cm, with the growing tips just showing, and wait 3 to 4 days before filling. Round floating leaves follow, then the first upright leaves. After 2 to 3 seasons, once the pot is full, divide the rhizome in spring or transfer the root ball to a container of about 150 litres.
