The Bonny Lotus is a small lotus with a single pink flower of about 10 cm, designed for terraces as well as pond edges. It stands 30 to 50 cm above the water, which means it can be grown in a 20-litre pot. This container is enough for it for 2 to 3 years, under 10 to 20 cm of water.
Bonny is a small single-flowered lotus in a classic pink, standing 30 to 50 cm above the water. Its flowers measure around ten centimetres across and its leaves are 10 to 15 cm in diameter. This size makes it suited to patio pots as well as pond margins, since a 20-litre pot is enough for it for 2 to 3 years.
🌱 From April to the first flower
The rhizome is dispatched and planted between 1 April and 15 June, once the risk of frost has passed. Lay it flat on the soil, cover it with 2 to 3 cm or hold it down with a flat stone so that it does not float, wait 3 to 4 days, then add the water. Its growth starts when the water reaches about 20 °C, which happens earlier in a shallow patio pot than in a large pond, and the foliage develops in three stages.
The floating leaves
The first leaves of the year float flat on the water, small and round.
The upright leaves
They come afterwards and stand above the surface on a long stalk.
The buds
They form once the aerial foliage is established, and not before.
The flower
It measures about 10 cm and opens in summer, pink and single.
The tablets are placed on the day of planting
Push 6 to 9 pellets of Osmocote fertiliser for water lilies and lotuses into the soil of the pot at planting time, around the rhizome without touching it. Their slow release covers the whole season, so no application is poured into the water afterwards, where it would benefit the algae before the plant. The same step is repeated every spring, as long as your lotus stays in its pot.
🏺 A 20-litre pot
A 20-litre pot will carry your lotus for 2 to 3 years before it needs dividing. Choose one that is full-bodied, round and without corners, filled with a fine, rather clayey garden soil and finished with 1 or 2 cm of pozzolana to keep the soil from escaping into the water. The water depth is then set between 10 and 20 cm above this grow medium, and you prop the pot on a support if your pond is deeper, as for the other marginal aquatic plants.
Do not move the pot once the plant has taken
Once growth is under way, leave the pot where it is until the foliage dies back in autumn. Dividing and repotting are done in March, while the rhizome is dormant, and at no other time. A pot that is lifted, turned over or moved in mid-season breaks stalks and roots that the plant will not regrow until the following year.
🌿 Dividing the rhizome
After 2 to 3 seasons, the rhizome has filled the whole pot. Lift it in March, before growth resumes, and clear the soil away by hand without forcing, because the rhizome is fragile at the nodes and a split node lets water in. Cut the chain of tubers 3 or 4 cm from a node, keep 2 or 3 tubers at the end of each section and never break the growing tip. Replant the best section in fresh soil, or move the whole root ball into a tub of about 150 litres.
🐟 In a stocked pond
The growing season lasts about 140 to 150 days in a pot, and it closes in autumn, when the foliage yellows and dies back. The lotus then takes up nothing at all: in a system where plants live on the fish's water, it is the plants in the grow beds that alone absorb the nitrates from November to March, while the rhizome sleeps at the bottom of its pot. Because its soil stays enclosed in the pot, the water in your pond receives no grow medium; in a circuit connected to crops, however, fertiliser tablets are reserved for pots kept outside the circuit, so as not to skew your readings.
