Barbed Y fitting 8 mm for flexible pipe
This 8 mm barbed Y-fitting splits the flow of a small flexible pipe between two symmetrical branches, or combines two inlets into one. It is the part that distributes the solution to the spray nozzles of the CultiMate Aero aeroponic pot.
It is moulded in white polyoxymethylene and sold individually or in packs of 2.
The summary
- What you receive: 1 or 2 Y-fittings of 8 mm, depending on the format chosen.
- The pipe: a flexible pipe with an internal diameter of approximately 8 mm.
- The use: distributing the solution between two sprinklers, particularly in the aeroponic pot.
- The material: polyoxymethylene, a rigid plastic that keeps its ridges sharp and precise.
Small three-barbed fitting for splitting the solution between two sprayers or two drippers
In aeroponics, every sprayer must receive the same pressure, otherwise part of the root zone dries out whilst the rest is drenched. This Y-fitting splits an 8 mm pipe into two identical branches, set at equal angles on either side of the inlet, distributing the flow more evenly than a right-angle tee. It measures 47 mm tall by 45 mm wide, weighs 3 g, and is fitted tool-free by pushing the pipe onto its barbs.
🌫️ Distribute the pressure between two sprinklers
In the 5-plant aeroponic pot, the pump pushes the solution through a pipe that divides towards the sprayers positioned beneath the baskets. The Y fitting goes at this junction, with the inlet facing the pump and the two branches facing the sprayers. The two outlet pipes must be the same length, because a longer pipe restricts the flow and reduces the pressure at the sprayer it feeds.
Supplying a branched circuit with a small pump
If you are building your own branched circuit feeding two sprinklers or four drippers, the 600 L/h adjustable-flow submersible pump supplies it with the same nominal flow rate as the pump in the 5-plant aeroponic pot. Its regulator lets you reduce the flow when the outlets are running too fast, or increase it when the last branch is losing pressure. Set it up with clean water until you have a steady output at each branch, then check there are no leaks at the joints before connecting the plants.
Polyoxymethylene, also known as POM or acetal, is a hard engineering plastic that is highly stable and very resistant to wear. Its teeth remain sharp after repeated fittings, whereas a softer plastic will eventually round off and start to leak. It does not react with fertilisers or pH correctors at normal working concentrations, and it is suitable for use in both hydroponics and aquaponics.
Measure the pipe before ordering
The 8 mm connectors are suitable for flexible pipe with an internal diameter of approximately 8 mm. They are not compatible with 4 x 6 mm air pipe, which is too narrow, nor with 12 mm pipe, which would sit loosely on the barbs and leak. Measure the inside of your pipe with a vernier calliper or a drill bit before ordering.
Take a drip irrigation circuit with 4 planters fed by an 8 mm pipe. A first Y-fitting splits the inlet into two branches, then a Y-fitting on each branch divides the flow again, that is 3 fittings in total to supply 4 drippers symmetrically. The outlets will then receive a similar flow rate, provided you cut all four outlet pipes to the same length.
This branching layout, where each split divides into two, gives a far more even distribution than a row of tees placed one after another, where the first outlets receive more water than the last. This means your plants are watered evenly along the full length of the circuit, without having to adjust each dripper by hand, and you can add an extra split whenever the circuit is extended.
🔧 Assembly
Cut the pipe cleanly straight with a craft knife, then push it onto the fitting until it reaches the bottom of the barbs, turning it slightly as you go. A rigid pipe softens after a few seconds in hot water. To disassemble, cut the pipe flush with the fitting rather than pulling it off, which preserves the barbs. The maintenance guide for a soilless system recommends checking these fittings at every clean-down.
🧰 Individually or in packs of 2
The single-unit format replaces a broken part; the pack of 2 fittings provides a spare or equips a small branched circuit. For larger pipes, from 14 to 16 mm, the 16 mm barbed fittings take over, both as straight connectors and as elbows, and can be combined within the same circulation network. Store spare parts away from light in a sealed bag.
