20 mm barbed tee for flexible pipe, pack of 5 or 10
This 20 mm barbed T-fitting splits water from a flexible pipe into two outlets, or combines two returns into one. Its three barbed ends accept pipe with an internal diameter of 18 to 20 mm, such as 18 x 22 mm black pipe.
Moulded in black polypropylene, it is sold in packs of 5 or 10 identical pieces.
The summary
- What you receive: 5 or 10 barbed tees of 20 mm, depending on the pack chosen.
- The pipe: a flexible pipe with an internal diameter of 18 to 20 mm.
- The use: splitting a pump outlet between two drip lines, or joining two return lines.
- Fitting: push-fit onto the barbs, no adhesive required, use a jubilee clip behind a high-powered pump.
Three-barb fitting for splitting or combining a water circuit in 20 mm flexible pipe
As soon as a pump feeds more than one tank, its flow rate needs to be split. This barbed tee fitting does exactly that on a 20 mm flexible pipe, with three serrated-barb spigots that push into the pipe wall and hold it in place without adhesive. At 77 mm long and 43 mm high, it weighs 8 g and is discreet enough to tuck behind a reservoir. Cut the pipe, push the three branches in, and the branch connection is done.
🔀 Splitting or joining a flow
Fitted with the inlet on the central nozzle, it splits the output from a single pump into two outlets, for example, two channels in an NFT system or two growing beds. Fitted the other way round, it combines two return flows into a single pipe back to the reservoir. The split is only equal if both branches are the same length and height, since water always takes the path of least resistance. On an unbalanced setup, you add a valve to the favoured branch to restore the balance.
Connect the tee to the 18 x 22 mm black pipe
The 18 x 22 mm black flexible pipe, sold by the metre, fits directly onto these connectors. Being opaque, it prevents light from reaching the solution, which limits algae growth within the circuit. This means you can complete an entire bypass using a single pipe reference.
Add a clip behind a high-powered pump
The push-fit connectors hold on their own with a gravity-fed setup or behind a small pump. Behind a powerful pump, or if the pipe is rigid, fit a clip on each fitting, otherwise a branch can come loose and drain the reservoir onto the floor. Check for drips at first start-up.
Take a 10-plant hydroponic gutter system whose pump delivers up to 950 L/h. A tee fitting placed just after the pump splits this flow between the two gutters, around 475 L/h each once pipe losses are accounted for. For a third gutter, add a second tee on one of the branches, then rebalance the branches using a valve.
🧪 A water-safe neutral plastic
Polypropylene is a widely used plastic for water contact, resistant to fertilisers and pH adjusters at normal working concentrations. Its black colour prevents light from entering the fitting. You can therefore use it in both aquaponics and hydroponics, and leave it in place for several seasons, away from direct sunlight, which gradually weakens all plastics over time.
🧰 Why a kit
A circuit almost always has more than one branch point, and these small parts are easily misplaced. The pack of 5 covers a multi-tank installation, while the pack of 10 leaves a reserve for modifications and repairs. For pipes of 14 to 16 mm, the 16 mm barbed fittings take over, in either straight or elbow form.
