This black PVC EHEIM pipe, 5 m long with a spiral-reinforced wall, withstands impacts, weather and UV, and keeps its bore in a bend. Its four diameters, from 19/23.5 to 38/44 mm, i.e. 3/4 to 1 1/2 inch, connect a pump, a filter or a pond clarifier.

The summary

  • The diameter: 19/23.5, 25/30, 32/37.5 or 38/44 mm, i.e. 3/4, 1, 1 1/4 or 1 1/2 inch.
  • The length: 5 m, to be cut to size on site rather than stretched between two points.
  • What the spiral adds: the pipe bends without crushing or kinking at an angle.
  • The pressure: 1 bar, more than a pond pump produces.
  • Outdoors: a PVC that withstands UV, bad weather and knocks.
  • How it arrives: in a 5 m coil, in a bulky parcel.

Flexible kink-resistant pipe, 5 m long, in four diameters

The EHEIM spiral pond hose, in 5 m of black PVC, connects a pump, a filter or a pond clarifier. Its spiral wall stops it from collapsing at a bend, which preserves the flow rate. It is available in 4 diameters, from 19/23.5 to 38/44 mm (3/4 to 1 1/2 inch), and withstands 1 bar.

An ordinary flexible pipe collapses as soon as you bend it a little tightly, and the flow drops at exactly the spot you cannot see. This EHEIM pipe has a spiral-reinforced wall, whose rigid coils stop it closing in on itself at a bend or under a weight. It measures 5 m, comes in four diameters and is intended for outdoor installations, as it resists UV, weather and knocks.

🌀 Reading a pipe diameter

Diameters are written in pairs: 19/23.5, 25/30, 32/37.5 and 38/44 mm. The first figure is the inner diameter, which must match the spigot the pipe is pushed onto; the second is the outer diameter, which determines the hose clamp. Pond equipment is often sized in inches, and the four sizes correspond in order to 3/4, 1, 1 1/4 and 1 1/2 inch. So check the size on your pump's outlet or on your filter's inlet before ordering, at both ends of the run:

Pump outlet

The diameter is read on the nozzle, often moulded into its plastic.

Filter inlet

A filter's inlet does not always have the same diameter as the pump: check both ends.

Return to the pond

Keep the diameter of the outlet, because a pipe narrower than the fitting reduces the flow.

Actual length

Measure the route rather than the distance as the crow flies, bends and curves included.

For the EHEIM units in the shop, the compatibility can be read straight off. The FLOW pond pumps connect in 1 inch or 1 1/4 inch, and also in 1 1/2 inch from the 6,200 L/h model upwards, with hose tails that you trim to the diameter of your pipe. The LOOP kits supply 5 m of spiral pipe in 3/4 inch on the two small models and in 1 inch on the two large ones, so this pipe extends their circuit at the same diameter. The pond UV steriliser accepts 1/2 to 1 inch up to 18 W, then 1 to 1 1/2 inch on the more powerful models.

A FLOW pump connected at the right diameter

If you are equipping a new pond, the FLOW submersible pond pump should be chosen at the same time as this pipe, because its ends are trimmed to the exact diameter of the spiral. The 3,200 L/h model connects in 25/30 or 32/37.5 mm, and the 6,200 L/h and larger models also accept 38/44 mm. You then tighten each end with a clamp, with no adapter between the pump and the filter.

A pond pipe, never a mains water pipe

This pipe is rated for a pressure of 1 bar. That is enough for a pond pump, since 1 bar corresponds to a water column of about 10 m and the most powerful FLOW pump tops out at 4.5 m of delivery head. It must never, however, be connected to the mains tap water supply, whose pressure is most often between 2 and 4 bar: a top-up is done in open air, from the top of the pond.

Where two diameters are possible, choose the largest that the nozzle will accept. A pipe narrower than the fitting loses flow along the whole run, and this loss increases with length and the number of bends. On a circuit longer than 5 m, two coils can be joined by a ribbed coupling sized to the inner diameter, secured with a clip at each end, which saves you from forcing a single pipe over the whole distance.

🔧 Fitting it to a circuit

The pipe slides onto a barbed fitting and is secured with a hose clamp placed on the outside diameter. Unroll it in the sun before fitting: warmed PVC goes on more easily and holds less of its coil shape. A dab of silicone grease spray on the fitting makes it easier to push the pipe on and, later, to take it off. Finally, avoid pulling the pipe taut between two points and leave some slack, so that the circuit can accommodate moving the pump without pulling on the fittings.

🐟 In aquaponics

In a garden aquaponic system, this pipe most often connects the pump in the fish pond to the grow beds, then returns the filtered water to the pond. To supply several beds, a PVC solvent-weld tee takes a short rigid tube in each branch, ending in a ribbed fitting, onto which you clamp the pipe with a hose clip. The pressure calculation remains simple: beds positioned 1 m above the water put about 0.1 bar on the pipe, which leaves a wide margin under its 1 bar rating. The guide to building an aquaponic system at home helps you plan the circuit between the pond and the beds.

☀️ Outdoors, all season

The PVC of this pipe resists UV and bad weather, which allows it to stay in place all season, at the edge of the pond or in a flower bed. Its black colour, however, absorbs heat: in full sun, water standing in an exposed length warms up and flows back into the pond lukewarm when the pump restarts. So route it through the shade of a border or under the plants rather than across a patio. Before winter, when you take the pump out of the pond, drain the pipe and store it coiled up under cover, so that frozen water does not deform its wall.
