Eheim fittings for aquarium pipe: T-piece, elbow and quick-release fitting
These EHEIM fittings extend, split or adapt the pipe of a filter or pump. The T-piece splits the water in two, the reducer joins two diameters, the quick-release fitting comes apart by hand and the locking nut tightens the pipe onto its nozzle.
They are available from 9/12 to 19/27 mm.
The summary
- Which fitting: tee to split, coupler to extend, reducer to change diameter.
- Which diameters: from 9/12 to 19/27 mm depending on the fitting.
- How to secure it: pushed into the pipe and tightened with a clip.
- Where to use it: in freshwater and in seawater alike.
Split, extend or adapt the pipe of a filter or pump
EHEIM fittings for aquarium pipe are used to split, extend or adapt the pipe of a filter or pump. The T-piece divides the water into two outlets, the coupler lengthens a pipe that is too short and the reducer joins two diameters. They are available from 9/12 to 19/27 mm, secured by a clip, for freshwater and seawater alike.
A water circuit is rarely built with a single straight pipe. You sometimes need to split a pump's flow between two beds, extend a pipe that is too short, move from one diameter to another or get round a corner without kinking the pipe. These EHEIM fittings cover each of these cases. Their ribbed ends push into the pipe and are then tightened with a clip so they do not slip, and the whole assembly can be used in freshwater as well as in seawater.
🔧 The right fitting for every case
The T-piece splits the water into two outlets of the same diameter, whereas the reducing T keeps the 16/22 in a straight line and leaves at 12/16 on the side. The straight connector joins two lengths of pipe, and the 9/12 elbow turns a right angle without kinking a small pipe. The reducers step from one diameter to another: the one-piece version stays in place, the quick-release version separates by hand. The quick-release fitting splits the pipe into two parts that you detach without tools, and the locking nut replaces the clamping nut of an EHEIM fitting or tap with a threaded end when it is lost or cracked.
Two tanks, one pump
A T-piece on the delivery pipe splits the water flow.
Pipe too short
A straight coupler of the same diameter extends it.
Pump in 12/16, pipe in 16/22
A 16/22 to 12/16 reducer connects the two.
Frequent dismantling
A quick-release fitting or quick-release reducer can be separated by hand.
Before cutting the pipe, hold the fitting in its intended position and check that the branches will not kink. Cut cleanly, with a cutter, so that the pipe sits against the whole length of the barb. One clip per outlet is enough to withstand the pressure of your aquarium pump: a stainless steel screw clip grips firmly and is easy to loosen, while a plastic ratchet clip is sufficient on small diameters. Place it just behind the ridge of the barb and tighten without crushing, as a pinched pipe eventually splits.
A double tap lets you disconnect without draining the circuit
If you often take a filter or pump apart, the JBL double tap with quick-release fitting, in 12/16 or 16/22 mm, is a useful addition to these fittings. It shuts off the water on both sides before the two halves are separated by hand, so the pipe stays full and the circuit primes again straight away. On a branch after a T-piece, it can also be used to reduce the strongest flow of water.
📏 Reading the diameters
Aquarium pipes are designated by two numbers: the inside diameter, then the outside diameter, in millimetres. A 12/16 pipe therefore has a 12 mm bore and a 2 mm wall. Fittings are chosen to match this inside bore, since the end of the fitting pushes into the pipe: a 12/16 fitting will slip loosely in a 16/22 pipe and will be forced into a 9/12 pipe. If in doubt, measure the bore of your pipe, or check the diameter given in the pump or filter manual. The EHEIM pipe is available in each of these diameters.
Diameter also determines flow rate. Each reduction slows the water a little, and a pump connected in 16/22 loses part of its flow if the water then passes into 9/12. So keep the largest diameter over the greatest length, and reduce only as close as possible to the appliance that requires it. Likewise, a tight elbow slows the flow more than a gentle curve in the pipe: keep it for corners where your pipe would otherwise kink.
🌱 In aquaponics
A single pump will often feed several grow beds. One T-piece per bed and one EHEIM shut-off valve per branch are enough to share out the water, because after a T-piece the shortest, lowest branch always receives more. The reducers then let you step down from the pump's large pipe to the narrower pipes of the beds. The guide to building your own aquaponic system shows how to lay out this circuit.
Take the example of a pump with 16/22 pipe that has to supply two grow beds fitted with 12/16 pipes. The reducing T keeps the 16/22 in a straight line towards the first bed and branches off in 12/16 towards the second. On the straight run, a 16/22 to 12/16 reducer then brings the pipe back to the right diameter before the first bed, and one tap per branch regulates the water supply to each. This setup needs 5 clamps, three on the reducing T and two on the reducer, and a quick-release reducer in place of the standard reducer lets you dismantle everything in a few seconds.
