The Hongbian Yudie 红边玉碟 lotus is a large, hardy Chinese lotus, rare in Europe, with a single pure white flower of 15 to 20 cm. Its leaves of 50 to 60 cm, held upright on long stalks, occupy up to 1 m² per mature plant and reach 1.20 to 1.50 m above the water, leaving the surface free beneath.
Hongbian Yudie 红边玉碟 is a Chinese lotus with a pure white flower, rare in Europe, sold as a bare rhizome that you plant in spring in a pot of heavy soil. Its single flower opens 15 to 20 cm above upright foliage that reaches 1.20 to 1.50 m, and the plant, which is hardy, disappears completely from the surface during winter.

🍶 A white saucer
The flower is pure white, its only colours being the yellow of the stamens and the soft green of the receptacle at the centre. With fewer petals than a double variety, it opens wide, so you can see the heart from the first day, and it keeps the shape of a shallow cup, resting flat on its stalk. It is this shape that the end of its Chinese name refers to, meaning a jade saucer; the beginning, "red edge", is part of the traditional name of this cultivar, whose flower remains white.
Flowering lasts a full 3 months, from June to August. Each flower opens on a new flower stalk and lasts a few days, then its receptacle is left on its own above the water, which leaves a mixture of open flowers and green seed pods on the plant at the end of summer. Throughout this period, however, it is the foliage that takes up the most room, and you would do well to estimate its spread before choosing where to put the pot.
🍃 A 60 cm leaf
A leaf 60 cm in diameter covers nearly 0.3 m², and a mature plant can cover up to 1 m² of water surface. To anticipate how much space it will take, count the leaves rather than the pot: the pot holds 20 litres in the first season, then about 150 litres once the root ball is transferred, but the foliage spreads well beyond its rim. This lotus occupies the surface at height, on long stalks, and leaves the water free beneath its leaves.
Cover the surface beneath the petioles
Beneath a lotus, the water stays bare, since its leaves are held in the air and do not touch the surface. A hardy yellow water lily Nymphaea Gold Medal occupies exactly this level, its leaves floating flat on the water. The two plants share the water surface without getting in each other's way, one in volume and the other right at the surface, and their combined shade limits the warming of the pond in summer.
🌙 Oxygen beneath the foliage
If you keep fish in the same pond or in an aquaponic system, be aware that foliage covering more than 30% of the surface reduces the oxygenation of the water at night, when no photosynthesis is left to offset the respiration of the fish, bacteria and plants. On a 4 m² pond, a single mature plant covering 1 m² already takes up 25%, and a few more leaves are enough to cross the threshold. Trim the excess leaves, as recommended in the guide lotus and filtration in aquaponics.
📦 Planting the rhizome
The rhizome is dispatched between 1 April and 15 June, cleaned and then wrapped in damp paper inside a plastic bag. Lay it flat on the firmed soil of a 20-litre pot, growing tips turned towards the centre, cover it with 2 to 3 cm of soil while leaving those tips just showing, then add 1 to 2 cm of pozzolana. Wait 3 to 4 days before placing the pot under 30 cm of water, in a spot that gets at least 6 hours of direct sun.
📖 The name describes the flower
The four characters of the name read like a description: 红 for red, 边 for edge, 玉 for jade, 碟 for saucer. A Chinese cultivar name therefore describes a shape and a shade, whereas a catalogue category only records a dominant colour. Remembering the original name is useful when buying, because it is the name that follows the plant from one country to another, while the commercial translation changes at every border.
