5.5 mm pellets for trout and salmonids weighing 100 to 400 g
This 5.5 mm extruded pellet is a grow-out feed designed for trout and other salmonids raised in aquaponics, from 100 to 400 g live weight. It is over this weight range that growth is fastest, and therefore that protein requirements are highest: the pellet contains 45% crude protein and 17% fat, with no terrestrial animal protein whatsoever. This feed is suitable for use in organic aquaculture.
⚖️ Size according to weight
Pellet size should be chosen according to the fish's weight, not its age. The 5.5 mm size suits trout of 100 to 400 g, roughly twenty to thirty centimetres in length. A pellet too large for the mouth is rejected and sinks to the bottom, where it breaks down and overloads the filter. Conversely, a pellet that is too small forces the trout to take many more mouthfuls to meet its needs, making it much harder to assess the ration by eye. When several size classes share the same pond, feed at the size suited to the smallest fish, since the larger ones will readily accept a finer pellet.
Under 100 g
Young trout, or fingerlings, that have just passed the fry stage. A 4 mm pellet is better suited to the size of their mouths.
100 to 400 g
The bulking phase targeted by this size, during which growth is at its fastest.
Over 400 g
Large trout and broodstock. A 7.5 mm gauge then reduces the number of sampling points required.
Several sizes in the pond
Use the size of your smallest specimens as the benchmark: the larger ones will manage perfectly well.
🌡️ The ration according to temperature
Trout is a poikilothermic fish: its body temperature follows that of the water, and its metabolism, and therefore its feed requirements, are directly dependent on it. The ration is expressed as a percentage of live body weight per day. For trout weighing 100 to 150 g, this ranges from 0.97% at 4°C to 1.49% at 20°C; for trout weighing 200 to 400 g, from 0.85% to 1.30% over the same range, as requirements relative to body weight decrease as the fish grows. In practice, if you are keeping 30 trout averaging 250 g, 7.5 kg of live weight in total, they will receive between 64 and 98 g of feed per day depending on the season. These rates are a starting point: weigh the ration once, then adjust by observing feeding behaviour, which should be complete within a few minutes. Above 20°C, dissolved oxygen levels fall while the fish's oxygen consumption rises, so you should reduce the ration even when appetite remains strong.
Measure dissolved oxygen before increasing the feed rate
Among the fish raised in aquaponics, trout is the most demanding in terms of dissolved oxygen. It is therefore this parameter, far more than appetite, that determines the feeding rate your pond can support. A dissolved oxygen test allows you to check this before each increase, particularly when the water exceeds 18 °C. The following day, an ammonium test will show whether the biological filtration has absorbed this rise in feed input.
Unabsorbed phosphorus passes into the water
This pellet contains 1.7% phosphorus, a typical level for a high-protein salmonid feed. The fraction the fish does not absorb is excreted into the water, where it benefits plants, but also algae when light levels are high and feeding rates are excessive. Remove uneaten pellets after each meal, and reduce the ration in warm weather before the water turns cloudy.
🌱 The nitrogen source for your crops
In an aquaponic system, feed is the only input to the circuit, and therefore the sole source of nutrients for the plants. A crude protein content of 45% corresponds to roughly 7.2% nitrogen. Trout fix a proportion of this for growth and excrete around half through their gills in the form of ammonium; the nitrifying bacteria in the filter then convert it into nitrite, and then into nitrate, the form of nitrogen that plants absorb most readily. For every 90 g of feed distributed per day, containing around 6.5 g of nitrogen, some 3 g enter the growing water, enough to feed several square metres of leafy crops. You therefore manage the ration on two levels: the needs of the trout on one hand, and the planted area that must absorb their waste on the other. Our article on the nitrogen cycle in aquaponics covers each of these stages in detail.
♻️ Approved for use in organic aquaculture
This feed is approved for use in organic aquaculture. It complies with Regulations (EC) No. 834/2007, 889/2008 and 710/2009, and its conformity is verified by the certification body FR-BIO-10. Its manufacture is also certified to GlobalG.A.P., and the formula contains no terrestrial animal protein, meaning no meal derived from poultry or pigs. A farm operating under organic certification can therefore use it without departing from its specification. For a domestic set-up, this is above all a guarantee of the origin and traceability of the raw materials. Finally, if you are considering selling produce under an organic label in the future, starting with a compliant feed means you will not need to change formula mid-cycle.
📦 Storing the food in the right conditions
A 20 kg bag covers nearly 7 months of feeding for 30 trout of 250 g fed at full ration during the season. A pond stocked at twice that density will use it in approximately 3 and a half months, which remains compatible with the 6-month shelf life from the date of manufacture. The quality of the feed then depends on storage conditions: a clean, cool, and dry area, the bag resealed after each use and placed on a pallet if the floor is damp. Lipids are the first components to oxidise; a rancid smell indicates a feed whose nutritional value has declined and which is best used up quickly. For the small quantity kept near the pond for day-to-day use, store it in an airtight container away from sunlight and heat.
