The summary

  • What it is: three pond formulas combined, with 20 to 34% protein depending on the fish.
  • What sets them apart: the target fish, the size of the pellet and whether it floats or sinks.
  • How to choose: where your fish feed and the species that lives on the bottom point to the right formula.
  • What you should check: the water temperature, as the sturgeon formula stops at 25 °C.

Floating or sinking pearls depending on the species, for goldfish, sturgeon and native fish

This item brings together three pond foods that are not intended for the same fish. Their labels declare 20%, 34% and 34% protein, and you choose the formula in the selector according to the species you are feeding.

🐠 Three formulas, three fish

The Goldfish formula comes as 3 mm floating pearls, for goldfish of 5 to 15 cm, and it is fed at temperatures from 10 to 30 °C. The Sterlet formula is a richer sinking pearl, at 34% protein and 10% fat, intended for sturgeon over 15 cm that look for their food on the bottom. The Biotope formula is aimed at native fish such as ide, gudgeon and minnow, with a 1.5 mm sinking pearl at 34% protein. If you keep a koi pond, the all-season food for koi and goldfish is the one calibrated for them.

Floating

The Goldfish pearl stays at the surface, so you can watch each goldfish feed.

Sinking

Sterlet and Biotope pearls reach fish that feed near the bottom.

The richest

With 34% protein and 10% fat, the Sterlet formula is the most nutrient-dense of the three.

The finest

The 1.5 mm Biotope pearl suits the small mouths of minnows and young gudgeon.

The sturgeon formula stops at 25 °C

The three formulas do not cover the same temperature range. The Goldfish and Biotope formulas are given from 10 to 30 °C, whereas the Sterlet formula stops at 25 °C. A shallow pond can exceed this threshold in summer, and you then suspend feeding to the sturgeon. Take the temperature in the afternoon, when the water is at its warmest, and not in the morning when you feed.

Aerating a pond that houses sturgeon

Sturgeon live close to the bottom and need well-oxygenated water, which becomes critical in summer, when warm water holds less dissolved oxygen. The complete pond aerator delivers air all the way to the bottom, where your sturgeon stay, day and night. The guide to sturgeon in a garden pond details the depth and oxygenation they require.

🧪 The filter load

Proteins contain about 16% nitrogen, and what your fish do not retain passes into the water as ammonium, which the biological filter has to process. For every 100 g fed, the Goldfish formula therefore supplies nearly 3.2 g of nitrogen, compared with about 5.4 g for the Sterlet and Biotope formulas. A sturgeon pond therefore needs more generous filtration than a goldfish pond of the same volume, fed the same quantity. The nitrate NO3 water test lets you track the nitrate that builds up at the end of the chain.

🌱 In aquaponics

In a system where crops share the fish's water, this nitrogen is not lost: once the ammonium has been nitrified by the bacteria, it becomes the nitrate that feeds the plants, as described in the article on the nitrogen cycle in aquaponics. The goldfish, which tolerates a wide range of temperatures, is one of the most common species in small temperate-water systems. The Goldfish formula is therefore suitable for an aquaponic pond stocked with goldfish, whose care is covered in detail in the guide to goldfish in aquaponics.
