This floating food for koi and goldfish can be fed as long as the pond water stays between 10 and 25 °C. It contains about 3 parts protein to 1 part fat, and comes in four forms: pellets, sticks, flakes or a mix.
The summary
- What it is: a pond food to be given at 10 to 25 °C, available in four forms.
- The ratio that defines it: roughly 3 parts protein to 1 part fat, all season long.
- How to choose: the form depends on the size of the fish's mouths and the way you feed.
- What to keep an eye on: the water temperature, which determines the ration and when to stop feeding.
Floating food for koi and goldfish, as pearls, sticks or flakes, from 10 to 25 °C
This pond food can be given as long as the water stays between 10 and 25 °C. It is based on a ratio of about 3 parts protein to 1 part fat, and it comes in four forms that change the size of the bite, not this ratio.
🐟 Four bite shapes
The four forms share the same recipe logic and differ mainly in the size of the bite. The pellets are 5 mm floating granules, which fish over 15 cm take with ease, and the 14 mm sticks suit the largest fish. The flakes, richer at 31% protein, break up in the water, which makes them accessible to small mouths, while the mix combines flakes and sticks for a pond where your fish of different sizes feed together.
The pearls
This 5 mm floating granule contains 24% protein and 7% fat.
The sticks
This 14 mm floating stick contains 24% protein and 9% fat.
Flakes
This richer floating flake contains 31% protein and 9% fat.
The mix
It combines flakes and sticks, with 24% protein, suitable for use up to 30 °C.
🌡️ From 10 to 25 °C
A pond fish is cold-blooded, and its metabolism follows the water temperature. That is why the formula changes with the season: the winter food in the range contains 22% protein to 11% fat, a ratio of 2 to 1, because a fish at 8 °C digests slowly and mainly needs energy. Between 10 and 25 °C, by contrast, your fish grow and use more protein, which the ratio of about 3 to 1 in this food provides. Before opening the bag, you therefore check the water temperature.
Strengthen the filter when the ration increases
What your fish do not assimilate ends up in the water as ammonium, and it is the bacteria in the filter that then convert it into nitrite and then nitrate. When you increase the ration in spring, this colony takes 1 to 2 weeks to grow in proportion, and during that delay the excess nutrients encourage green water. Concentrated pond bacteria reinforce the filter at that point, and the ammonium NH4 water test tells you when the ammonium level has dropped back to zero.
Below 5 °C, stop feeding
Below 5 °C, stop feeding entirely. Between 5 and 10 °C, this food is no longer suitable and the winter food for pond fish takes over, with less protein. Take the temperature at 15 cm below the surface, because the air temperature on a sunny October day tells you nothing about the pond water.
🥄 How much to give each day
The ration is calculated as a proportion of body weight and depends on the size of the fish. An adult koi carp eats 1 to 2% of its weight per day, whereas a smaller fish eats 3.5 to 5%. Young fish receive this ration in at least 3 meals, while 1 to 2 meals a day are enough for an adult.
🌿 The feeding ration in aquaponics
In an aquaponic system, the fish ration is the main source of nitrogen for the crops. Protein contains about 16% nitrogen, so 100 g of pellets at 24% protein provide nearly 4 g of nitrogen, a large share of which, not retained by the fish, passes into the water as ammonium before being nitrified. If you keep the same formula from the restart in autumn, the nitrogen supply to the plants therefore stays stable, whereas switching to flakes at 31% increases it by about 30% for the same quantity fed. The guide to koi carp in aquaponics details how to run a pond connected to crops.
