This drain-down kit comprises a small submersible pump — the Sicce Mi Mouse, rated at 300 L/h and 3.8 W — and 2 metres of black flexible pipe. Place the pump at the bottom of the reservoir, direct the pipe towards a sink or bucket, and the reservoir empties without any need to lift or tilt it.

This is the kit supplied with the 20-plant drip system, and it also works with any reservoir or small aquaponic tank.

The summary

  • What you receive: a Sicce Mi Mouse pump at 300 L/h, 2 m of black flexible pipe, and the pump instructions.
  • How it works: the pump sits on the bottom of the tank and pushes water through the pipe towards a sink or bucket.
  • The limitation: the end of the pipe must stay less than 50 cm above the pump, otherwise flow drops to zero.
  • Timing: allow around half an hour to empty a 100-litre tank.

Small submersible pump and flexible pipe for draining a nutrient reservoir or tank without having to move it

A 50 or 100-litre reservoir full of nutrient solution weighs as much as a person, and it is often positioned under a growing table or at the base of a tower, where tipping it is simply not possible. Changing the solution, recommended every 2 to 3 weeks in hydroponics, becomes very awkward without the right equipment. This kit solves the problem with a small submersible pump and a flexible pipe: you empty the reservoir in place, then rinse and refill it without moving anything.

🚿 Draining without lifting the tank

Place the pump flat on the bottom of the reservoir, fit the pipe onto its outlet, and place the other end in a sink, drain, or bucket. Once the pump is plugged in, water flows through the pipe without priming, unlike a siphon, which only works if the outlet sits below the water level in the reservoir. Its bottom-intake design allows it to empty the reservoir almost completely, leaving only a shallow residue to sponge up before rinsing. Unplug the pump as soon as the suction breaks.

The 300 L/h flow rate is measured at zero head. As soon as the water needs to be pushed upward, the flow drops, falling to zero at 50 cm above the pump according to the instructions: the pump is designed to drain towards a low point or to the same level, not to lift water into an elevated sink. In practice, with the outlet resting on the rim of a bucket or in a floor drain, you can empty a 100-litre reservoir in around half an hour, and a 20-litre container in a few minutes.

Drain the reservoir of a drip irrigation system

This kit is the one supplied with the 20-plant version of the hydroponic gutter system, whose reservoir sits beneath the growing gutters. You keep it permanently beside the reservoir, which makes renewing the solution as straightforward as flicking a switch. It is also the part to order if the original has been lost or if its pump has stopped working.

Unplug the pump before the reservoir runs dry

The pump must never run dry, as its rotor is cooled and lubricated by the water. Stay nearby during draining and unplug it as soon as it starts drawing in air. Connect it via a 30 mA residual current device, never handle the pump while live in the water, and do not use it in water above 35 °C.

📦 What's in the kit

The pump is a Mi Mouse from the Italian brand Sicce, one of the smallest submersible pumps in its range, measuring 42 mm wide, 58.5 mm long and 46 mm tall. It draws 3.8 W at 230 V, delivers up to 300 L/h and has a 1.5 m cable. Flow rate is adjusted via a dial, and anti-vibration feet keep it on the bottom of the tank. The 2-metre black pipe slides onto the pump's 13 mm outlet, and its opaque wall prevents algae from developing if the pipe is left in place.

🐟 In aquaponics

In a small aquaponic system, the kit is used for partial water changes, between 10 and 20% of the total volume depending on the fish load. Rather than discarding this water, direct it into a watering can or a vegetable bed: rich in nitrates and dissolved organic matter, it acts as a fertiliser for your garden plants. By placing the pump at the bottom of the pond or sump, you also recover some of the accumulated sediment in the process. For a pond of over 300 litres, a more powerful pump will save you a considerable amount of time.

🔧 Pump maintenance

After each drain-down of a nutrient solution, run the pump for one minute in clean water to flush out any salts before they dry onto the rotor. Every 1 to 2 months of use, open the front panel, remove the rotor and rinse it under lukewarm water, then reassemble in reverse order. The cable is not replaceable: if it is damaged, the whole pump must be replaced. Store the pipe coiled flat, without bending it, so that it keeps its shape. Once emptied, rinse the reservoir with a rinsing solution before refilling.

The same pump is useful beyond just emptying tanks, which makes the kit well worth having. You can use it to stir a reservoir while dissolving a fertiliser, to transfer solution from one tank to another, or to run a small indoor fountain. Its modest flow rate suits these occasional tasks, but not the continuous circulation of a growing system, which requires a pump sized to the required head and flow rate. It is best kept as a utility pump, alongside your reservoirs.
