45 L reservoir lid for gutter systems
This 43 x 43 cm lid is the original part for the 45 L reservoir of the 10-plant GrowStream system. It keeps the nutrient solution in the dark, limits evaporation and has an inspection hatch for checking the pH and the level.
The summary
- What you receive: a white 43 x 43 cm lid, with its inspection hatch.
- Which tank: the 45 L reservoir of the 10-plant channel system.
- What it is for: keeping the solution in the dark, limiting algae and evaporation.
- What ships to you: a flat parcel of about 0.22 kg.
Replacement part for the 45 L tank, with a hatch for pH and level checks
This lid closes the 45 L reservoir of the 10-plant hydroponic gutter system. It is a white plate measuring 43 x 43 cm, drilled with the openings the system needs and fitted with an inspection hatch, which lets you replace a cracked or lost part without buying a new tank. It is also used to fit out a 45 L reservoir of the same model if you assemble a gutter system yourself.
🛡️ What the lid is for
The lid keeps the nutrient solution in the dark, which protects it from algae growth, since algae need light to develop and then compete with your plants for nutrients. It also limits evaporation, so the level in the tank drops more slowly between top-ups and the concentration of the solution changes more gradually. Finally, it stops dust, dead leaves and insects from falling into the reservoir, where they would decompose. The plastic used resists moisture, and the part is designed for both indoor and outdoor use.
🔍 The inspection hatch
A hatch cut into the lid gives you access to the solution without lifting it. You dip the pipette of a pH test into it, read the level through it, and pour in the top-up water or the pH correction without touching the gutters sitting above. This hatch matters all the more because the two gutters rest partly on the tank: lifting the whole lid means moving everything, whereas the hatch can be handled with one hand. This keeps your weekly check quick, which is the best way to spot a pH drift early.
The hatch closes again after each measurement
Close the hatch as soon as the measurement or top-up is finished. An opening left uncovered is enough to let light reach the solution, and a green film then appears on the walls of the tank within a few days in sunny weather. These algae then clog the pump strainer and use up some of the nutrients meant for the plants.
A pH test to keep near the hatch
The hatch is mainly there for pH monitoring, which you will carry out every week on a 45 L closed circuit. The pH drop test can be sampled directly through the opening with its syringe, without dismantling anything, and you read the result within a few seconds. Used with the pH- corrector, it lets you keep the solution between 5.8 and 6.2, the range in which plants absorb nutrients best.
A lid should be replaced as soon as a crack runs through the plate or a deformation stops it sitting flat on the rim of the tank. In both cases, light reaches the solution and evaporation increases, and you will soon notice it from a green deposit on the walls or a level that drops faster than usual. The replacement takes a few minutes, because the pump, its cable and the manifold simply pass back through the openings of the new part. Take the opportunity to rinse the tank and check the pump strainer, since the system is already shut down.
📐 Which reservoir to use
This lid is sized for the 45 L tank of the 10-plant system, the one that carries the two one-metre channels. The 20-plant system and the larger models use a longer 150 L reservoir, which has its own lid and so does not take this one. If you extend your 10-plant system with a third channel, this lid remains suitable as long as you keep the original tank. Before ordering, measure the top of your reservoir: it must accommodate a 43 cm square plate.
🧽 Cleaning the lid
The lid is rinsed with clean water at every complete renewal of the solution, that is every 2 to 3 weeks, at the same time as the tank. Its underside collects condensation and splashes from the gutter return, and mineral salts eventually form a white deposit on it. A cloth soaked in diluted white vinegar dissolves it, provided you then rinse thoroughly so as not to alter the pH of the next solution. Store it flat between seasons, which prevents it from warping and ensures it will close the tank again without letting light through.
