Daily timer
This mechanical daily timer plugs in between the socket and the appliance to automate feeding on a 24-hour cycle. Tripper segments set the on periods, so you can switch on a grow light or restart a pump at the same times every day.
The summary
- What it is: a mechanical dial timer that fits between the socket and the appliance.
- Its cycle: 24 hours, repeated identically every day.
- How to set it: you push in the segments for the periods when the appliance should run, to the nearest quarter of an hour.
- What it is for: switching a grow light on or restarting a pump at the same times each day.
Mechanical segment timer, for switching a lamp on or restarting a pump every day
The daily timer is a mechanical dial timer that sits between the socket and the appliance to repeat the same 24-hour cycle every day. You set it by pushing down 15-minute segments, for example to switch on a grow light from 6 am to 10 pm or to restart a pump at the same times each day.
This daily timer is a mechanical dial timer. You plug it into a wall socket, plug your appliance into it, and it switches the power on and off at the times you have chosen, every day, without you having to think about it.
🕛 A 24-hour dial
The dial makes one full turn of the day in 24 hours, and its rim is graduated in quarter-hours. To set the time, turn it in the direction of the arrow until the current time lines up with the triangular marker. You then push down, one by one, the segments on the rim that correspond to the periods when power should be on: each segment covers a quarter of an hour, and the programme repeats identically every day. You set it once, then leave it alone for as long as your schedule does not change.
The dial
It runs on a 24-hour cycle, and you set it to the current time by turning it to line up with the mark.
Segments
Each segment covers a quarter of an hour, and you push in those for the running periods.
The socket
A French socket with earth accepts the plug of your lamp or pump.
Take a grow lamp that needs to be lit for 16 hours a day, from 6 am to 10 pm (6 h to 22 h). You push down the 64 segments between 6 h and 22 h and leave the other 32 raised: the lamp switches on at 6 h, switches off at 22 h, and the cycle starts again the next day. If you later want to extend the lighting until 23 h, simply push down the next 4 segments, without touching the rest of the programme.
Switch on an LED bar at the same times every day
If you grow tomatoes, peppers or strawberries under lights, the 95 cm flowering LED bar plugs into this timer. Its light, enriched in red from 640 to 660 nm, supports flowering and fruit set. Plugged in here, it switches on and off at the same times every day, without fail, even on days when you are away.
The power rating is printed on the housing
Before plugging in a heating appliance or a motor, compare its power rating with the one printed on the timer's casing. Do not plug a loaded extension lead into it. If you connect several appliances, it is the sum of their power ratings that must not exceed this figure.
The dial is driven by the mains current, with no battery or rechargeable cell. During a power cut it therefore stops along with the appliance, then restarts with the accumulated delay, so after a power failure you reset it to the correct time against the marker; the segments you have pushed down, however, stay in place. The slider on the side of the housing lets you override the programme without touching the segments you have set, for example to switch a light on for the duration of a job.
🔌 Lamps and pumps
A grow light that comes on at the same times gives your plants a regular rhythm of day and night. The timer is therefore suitable for grow lights, hung above the plants with a hanging system. A filling or draining pump can be controlled in the same way, since the timer simply switches the power to the socket on and off.
🌱 In aquaponics
In a grow bed filled with grow medium, the pump can be controlled by a timer rather than a bell siphon, to alternate filling and draining: the timer switches the pump off and on again at the times you choose. The air pump in the fish tank, on the other hand, runs continuously, because your fish and the bacteria in the filter use oxygen day and night, and it must never be plugged in behind a timer. The guide on building your own aquaponic system explains these two ways of draining a bed.
