These original EHEIM replacement foams replace the worn media in LOOP, LOOPpro and PRESS pond filters: coarse foam for debris, fine foam for particles, an activated carbon pad to clarify the water, sponges and pre-filter for the LOOPpro. Choose your filter, then the foam to replace.
The summary
- What it is: the original filter media for EHEIM LOOP, LOOPpro and PRESS pond filters.
- Three materials: a coarse foam for debris, a fine foam for particles, an activated carbon cushion.
- Which one to replace: the one that no longer comes clean when rinsed, only one at a time.
- For which filter: LOOP 5000 to 15000, LOOPpro 6000 to 12000, or PRESS 7000 and 10000.
- The carbon: a cushion that lasts about 4 weeks, used after a treatment or against discoloured water.
- How they arrive: in a sealed EHEIM bag, by Colissimo or Chronopost to your door.
Coarse and fine foams and original activated carbon for EHEIM pond filters
In a pond filter, the foams filter continuously: they catch decomposed leaves, suspended silt and fish droppings, and their porosity also shelters some of the bacteria that purify the water. Regular washing restores them for several seasons, but a foam eventually compacts and keeps its brown colour even after rinsing. These genuine EHEIM parts then replace those in your LOOP, LOOPpro or PRESS filter exactly, in the same size, with no cutting or adaptation.
🧽 Three materials, three roles
The water arriving from the pump passes through the media in a precise order. The coarse sponge, called REPLAY RAW, first retains the largest particles, so that the following stages clog less quickly. The activated carbon pad, called REFINE COAL, then fixes by adsorption the dissolved substances that colour the water, odours and medication residues. The fine sponge, called REPLAY FINE, finally stops the fine particles that the first two stages let through. Both sponges have a highly porous surface on which beneficial micro-organisms settle, whereas the carbon serves mainly to clarify the water.
Coarse foam
It catches debris first and protects the following stages from rapid clogging.
Charcoal pad
It adsorbs the colouring of the water, odours and residues from medicinal treatments.
Fine foam
It traps the fine particles that give the water a milky or cloudy appearance.
The bacteria
They colonise the pores of the two foams and convert the nitrogenous waste produced by the fish.
🔄 The right time to change
You replace a foam according to its condition rather than on a schedule. As long as the return flow to the pond remains adequate, leave the media in place, because every cleaning disturbs the bacterial colony. When the flow drops noticeably, rinse the foam concerned, then put it back in place. Replacement becomes necessary when the foam no longer regains its springiness or its colour after rinsing, or when it tears. The carbon pad follows a different logic, since it becomes saturated in about 4 weeks and cannot be regenerated by rinsing: replace it as soon as the water becomes discoloured again.
Rinse without detergent, one sponge at a time
Even traces of a cleaning product, and hot water, kill the bacteria living in the foam. Rinse it in cold water, preferably in a bucket of water taken from the pond, and never replace the coarse foam and the fine foam on the same day. The colony remaining on the old foam then seeds the new one within a few weeks, and your filter keeps purifying in the meantime.
Seed a new foam more quickly
A sponge fresh out of its packet carries no bacteria yet. Concentrated bacteria powder for ponds shortens this colonisation period, especially in spring, when the water warms up and the fish start feeding again. Pour the dose near the pump intake on the day of the replacement, so that the strains settle directly on the new sponge.
📏 Which reference for which filter
The LOOP 5000 and 7000 filters share the same tank, and therefore the same media, and the same goes for the LOOP 10000 and 15000, whose carbon cushion measures 54.5 x 36 cm compared with 35.5 x 26 cm on the smaller models. The PRESS 7000 and 10000 pressure filters use round foams, specific to their tank, in coarse and fine versions. The LOOPpro filters have their own sponges, sold in sets of two: one set for the LOOPpro 6000, another for the LOOPpro 8000 and 12000, and a blue pre-filtration foam for the LOOPpro 6000 and 8000. If you own a LOOP pond filter, the model number is shown on the label on the tank. For a PRESS 10000 pressure filter, the foam can be changed without touching the biological media at the bottom of the tank.
🍂 Autumn and overwintering
Autumn is the season when the load on the sponges is at its highest. Leaves falling into the pond break up, clog the coarse sponge with debris and release tannins that give the water an amber tint, against which the carbon pad proves most useful. Remember to check the flow every week during this period, and to rinse the coarse sponge as soon as it weakens. Before winter, if you switch the filter off, rinse all the media, let them dry and then store them away from frost. If you leave it running, on the contrary, keep the sponges in place, because they then retain part of their colony for the spring restart.
🌱 Foam filters in aquaponics
In an aquaponic system connected to a pond, mechanical filtration decides what reaches the grow beds. The particles that the fine foam lets through settle on the roots and in the channels, where they use up oxygen as they break down. A foam in good condition therefore protects your crops as much as your fish. The charcoal pad, on the other hand, is for occasional use, for example to remove the residues of a medicinal treatment before reconnecting the grow beds. The guide on cloudy water in aquaponics details the causes of water that stays milky despite filtration.

Which sponge should you replace in your filter?
The three media in a LOOP filter do not do the same job. They differ in what they retain and in their maintenance.
