🔬 Water : The Foundation of Everything
In aquaponics, one parameter going awry can compromise everything in a matter of hours : an ammonia spike stresses your fish, an unstable pH blocks nutrient assimilation by your plants, a too-low carbonate hardness crashes your bacterial cycle. The problem is that none of these imbalances are visible to the naked eye. The water can appear perfectly clear, your fish seem active, your plants grow normally, and yet, beneath the surface, a chemical imbalance silently sets in. You need to measure to manage. And to measure correctly, you need the right tools.
🧪 5 Tests, 0 Blind Spots
The Essential Pack includes the 5 essential analyses for any aquaponist : NH4 (ammonia), NO2 (nitrites), NO3 (nitrates), pH, and KH (carbonate hardness). These five parameters cover the entire nitrogen cycle and the basic chemical conditions of your water.
Ammonia is the first warning sign : produced by fish, it must be rapidly converted by nitrifying bacteria. If it accumulates, it becomes toxic. Nitrites, an intermediate step in the cycle, are just as dangerous at high concentrations. Nitrates, on the other hand, are the useful end product : absorbed by your plants as natural fertilizer, they must remain within an acceptable range. pH conditions the activity of your bacteria and the availability of nutrients for your plants, ideally maintained between 6.8 and 7.2 in aquaponics. Finally, KH, or carbonate hardness, acts as a natural buffer that stabilizes your pH over time. Without sufficient KH, your pH can drop suddenly, with immediate consequences for your entire ecosystem.
With up to 50 tests per box, you have enough autonomy to monitor your system for several months, including during the start-up phase where checks should be almost daily.
🎯 Why Liquid Tests Instead of Test Strips ?
Test strips are convenient, but their precision is limited. A slight temperature variation, imperfect storage, too quick a reading : all factors that can distort the result. JBL Aquatest liquid tests work differently : a few drops of reagent in a water sample, agitation, a reading on the provided color chart. The result is clear, reproducible, and reliable, even for low values that would escape a test strip. This is the method recommended by experienced aquaponists, and the one we use ourselves on our systems.
💶 A Pack Designed for Your Budget
The Essential Pack is cheaper than buying each test separately. Most importantly, it prevents you from forgetting a critical parameter by not having ordered it in time. Everything is there, from the start, in one coherent pack : nothing to search for, nothing to assemble, nothing to regret.
🌿 Who is This Pack For ?
This pack is for anyone starting or managing a home aquaponic system, whether it's media bed, NFT, or DWC. It is particularly recommended during the first two months of cycling, a period when water monitoring must be rigorous and regular, with each introduction of new fish or significant change in the system, and as soon as you observe unusual behavior in your fish or slowed growth in your plants. It is also suitable for more advanced aquaponists who wish to maintain precise and documented tracking of their parameters over time.
💡 Our Advice
Always test your water at the same time, under the same conditions, and record your results in a notebook or spreadsheet. This simple habit will allow you to detect trends before they become problems, and to understand the specific dynamics of your system over the weeks.
