Amtra Air System 60 UPS battery-powered backup air pump
This air pump keeps a lithium battery permanently charged. If the power fails, it starts up by itself and keeps oxygenating the tank for up to 20 hours.
It is supplied with airline tubing, a non-return valve, a flow control valve and an air stone.
The summary
- What it does: it starts on its own when the power cuts out and aerates for up to 20 hours.
- Its output: 60 L/h on one outlet, for a consumption of 0.4 W.
- What you receive: pipe, non-return valve, flow control tap, Y fitting and air stone.
- How it recharges: by USB cable, from the mains, a power bank or a car socket.
Air pump with built-in battery that takes over on its own when the power cuts out
The Amtra Air System 60 UPS battery-powered backup air pump is used to oxygenate a tank when the power goes off: its built-in lithium battery lets it start on its own and aerate for up to 20 hours. It delivers 60 L/h from a single outlet for 0.4 W, which suits a small tank or serves as a back-up for tanks 60 to 80 cm long.
A power cut stops both the air pump and the water pump, and the dissolved oxygen level then begins to fall, all the faster the more heavily your tank is stocked with fish and the warmer the water. This air pump keeps a lithium battery permanently charged. When the mains supply fails, it starts up by itself, or carries on running without interruption if it was already running, and it delivers 60 litres of air per hour for up to 20 hours. Its power consumption of 0.4 W explains this run time, and the unit stays quiet, below 36 dB.
🔋 Two operating modes
In standard mode, the pump runs continuously like an ordinary air pump, and the battery is used only in the event of a power cut. In standby mode, it stays off as long as mains power is on and starts only when the power fails, until the mains returns or the battery runs flat. This second mode suits a tank that is already aerated by a more powerful pump: the Air System 60 UPS then serves purely as a backup, and its battery stays full for the day it is needed.
Power cut
The pump starts on its own and aerates the tank for 20 hours at most.
Transporting fish
Connected to an external battery, it aerates a bucket or a cool box.
Quarantine tank
Its single outlet is enough to aerate a small isolation tank.
During an absence
It aerates the tank for up to 20 hours if a power cut strikes while you are away on holiday.
One unit for 60 to 80 cm of tank
The 60 L/h flow rate is there to keep the fish alive for the duration of the power cut, not to replace the main aeration of a large volume. In a large tank, allow one unit for every 60 to 80 cm of length, or use a more powerful air pump, to cover the whole volume. A tank 160 cm long therefore needs two units, each placed with its airstone at one end.
Check the oxygen after a long power cut
The dissolved oxygen drop test tells you whether the emergency aeration was enough during the power cut. Take the measurement when the power returns, especially after an overnight cut in summer, since oxygen levels are at their lowest in the early morning. A low reading tells you that you need a second unit, or an airstone placed closer to the fish.
The battery is charged via the supplied USB cable, plugged into a 5 V USB charger, a power bank or a car socket fitted with a USB port. As long as this cable stays powered, the battery stays full, and it recharges by itself when the power returns after a cut. Plug the cable into a socket that you do not switch off with the tank lighting, otherwise the pump would run on battery every evening. This 5 V power supply also means you can take it away from the house, for a journey or for a tank set up far from a socket.
Place the pump on the cabinet or on a shelf, then connect the pipe to its outlet and set the airstone at the bottom of the tank. The non-return valve fits onto the pipe, between the pump and the tank, so that water never flows back towards the pump when it stops. The fine-adjustment tap reduces the flow if the bubbles are too strong for a small tank, and the Y fitting shares the air between two airstones. Anti-vibration feet, both inside and under the casing, limit the noise transmitted to the cabinet.
🌡️ Oxygen during a power cut
Water holds only a limited amount of oxygen, and this amount falls as the temperature rises: at saturation, it contains about 9.1 mg/L at 20 °C and 7.6 mg/L at 30 °C. In your tank, the fish, the filter bacteria and the decomposition of waste consume this oxygen continuously. As long as the air pump and the circulation are working, the agitated surface replaces what is consumed; when everything stops, nothing offsets the consumption any longer, and the level drops until the power returns.
The FAO's technical guides recommend maintaining at least 5 mg/L for most farmed fish. In summer, water at 28 °C starts out holding less oxygen than in winter, yet the fish consume more of it. An outage that begins at 22:00 and ends at 08:00 lasts 10 hours, which is half the pump's running time: that leaves you a margin for a longer failure, or for a storm that cuts the power twice in the same night.
🌱 In aquaponics
In an aquaponic system, a power cut stops both the aeration for the fish and the circulation that feeds the plants. The fish are the first to be at risk, because they use up the oxygen in their tank continuously, whereas the plants can tolerate the circulation being stopped for several hours. A battery-powered backup pump protects them until the power returns, while the grow bed simply stays idle. The aquaponics and summer holidays guide lists the precautions to take before leaving your system unattended.
In a 200-litre fish tank already fitted with a silent mains-powered air pump, the Air System 60 UPS is set to standby mode, with its air stone placed near the fish. It then runs only in the event of a power cut, and its battery stays fully charged. In a larger system, fit one unit for every 60 to 80 cm of fish tank length, and check the oxygen once the power returns.
📦 What's included
The pump is delivered ready to install: 1.2 metres of 4/6 mm pipe, a non-return valve, a fine-adjustment tap, a Y fitting, an air stone and the USB charging cable. The pipe can be cut to the length you want, and the Y fitting lets you feed two stones in the same tank, at the cost of the flow being shared between them. A second stone connects to the same pipe diameter, 4/6 mm, like the 30 mm round porous stone, which breaks the air into fine bubbles.
