JBL ProAir silent air pump for aquariums, 60 to 600 L/h
This air pump sits out of the water and blows air into an air stone, whose bubbles oxygenate an aquarium or an aquaponics tank. Its five models range from 60 to 600 L/h, with a noise level of 39 to 48 dB(A), and each arrives ready to plug in with pipe, valve and stone.
The summary
- What it is: a diaphragm air pump, placed out of the water, that feeds one or two air stones.
- Five models: from 60 L/h for a 40-litre tank to 600 L/h for a volume of 800 litres.
- The noise level: from 39 dB(A) for the a60 to 48 dB(A) for the a600, thanks to a soundproofing chamber.
- Installation: the pump is placed higher than the water surface, with the supplied non-return valve.
Air pump supplied ready to plug in, from 60 to 600 L/h, for aquariums and fish tanks
This diaphragm air pump sits beside the tank, out of the water, and pushes room air through a pipe to an air stone placed on the bottom. The stone breaks the flow into fine bubbles, which rise and stir the water column, constantly renewing the surface, where oxygen from the air dissolves. Each model comes as a complete set, with the pump, its air filter, 2 m of pipe, a non-return valve and one stone per outlet, so you can connect it the same day.
🔇 A diaphragm that stays quiet
An air pump runs continuously, day and night, so its noise matters as much as its output when the tank is in a living space. The reinforced casing encloses a soundproofing chamber, and rubber feet absorb the vibrations that a pump would otherwise transmit to the furniture. The noise level ranges from 39 dB(A) on the a60 and a100 to 48 dB(A) on the a600, and a flat, rough surface stops the pump from creeping under the effect of its own vibrations. You can also hang it on the wall using the eyelet provided on the back of the casing.
📏 Flow rate, pressure and depth
Flow rate tells you how much air the pump delivers, but it is pressure that decides how deep that air can still be released. One millibar is roughly equal to one centimetre of water column, and the pump has to overcome the full depth of water above your air stone. The a60 and a100 exceed 80 mbar, the a200 130 mbar, the a400 140 mbar and the a600 250 mbar. In an aquarium 50 cm deep, every model will do, whereas a tank where the stone sits 1 m down calls for at least the a200, since the stone and the pipe also use up part of the available pressure.
a60 and a100
These two models deliver 60 and 100 L/h for 2.5 W, and they suit tanks of 40 to 200 litres.
a200
This model delivers 200 L/h for 3.2 W and exceeds 130 mbar, for tanks of 90 to 300 litres.
a400
It splits 400 L/h for 5 W between two adjustable outlets, for volumes of 160 to 600 litres.
a600
The most powerful delivers 600 L/h for 10 W and exceeds 250 mbar, for volumes of 200 to 800 litres.
The pump sits higher than the water
Place or hang the pump above the surface of the tank, and fit the supplied non-return valve on each airline, with the arrow pointing in the direction of the airflow, towards the airstone. When the power is cut, water tends to travel back up the tubing by siphoning, and a pump sitting lower than the water level ends up flooded, with a risk of electric shock. The valve stops this backflow, and the height of the pump makes it impossible even if the valve becomes clogged.
Set the flow rate according to an oxygen reading
The right flow rate is the one that keeps enough oxygen in the water in the early morning, when its level is at its lowest. The dissolved oxygen drop test gives you this value in a few minutes, and you then know whether you need to open up the setting or whether the pump can run more gently. A reading taken once in summer, when warm water holds the least oxygen, is enough to set the adjustment for the year.
🌱 Aeration in an aquaponics system
In your aquaponics system, three consumers draw on the same dissolved oxygen: the fish, the nitrifying bacteria in the filter and the plant roots. The FAO technical guides recommend keeping at least 5 mg/L, and warming water holds less, since saturation falls from 9.1 mg/L at 20 °C to 7.6 mg/L at 30 °C. The two adjustable outlets on the a400 and a600 come into their own here: one feeds an air stone in the fish tank, the other a porous air diffuser pipe under the rafts of a deep water culture grow bed. For a 300-litre tank linked to a 100-litre grow bed, the a400 therefore covers both volumes from a single socket. The guide to looking after your aquaponic system in summer details the settings for the hot season.
🧽 Air filter and diaphragm
Under the casing, a small air filter catches dust from the room before it reaches the diaphragm. If your airflow weakens, the cause is most often this clogged filter or an air stone blocked by limescale, two parts you can change in a minute. The diaphragm, for its part, wears with running hours, and it is available as a complete replacement kit, to be changed as a whole rather than piece by piece.
📦 What each box contains
The a60, a100 and a200 are supplied with one air outlet, and therefore one 2 m pipe, one non-return valve and one air stone. The a400 and a600 have two, with two pipes, two valves and two stones, each outlet having its own adjustment screw in addition to the overall electronic adjustment. The warranty covers 2 years, rising to 4 years if you register the pump within that period, with wear parts such as the diaphragm remaining excluded. To add more air points, the cylindrical air stones connect to the same pipe diameter, via an air splitter.
