Newa Jet water pump for aquariums and aquaponics, 400 to 6,000 L/h
The Newa Jet is a multifunction water pump made in Italy, which can be used submerged or out of the water from the NJ 800 upwards. It circulates the water of an aquarium, feeds a filter, a fountain or the grow beds of an aquaponic system.
The range has nine models, from 400 to 6,000 L/h, and the flow rate is adjustable up to the NJ 3000.
The summary
- Which model: from 400 to 6,000 L/h depending on volume and head height.
- The head height: from 0.70 m to 3.60 m.
- Out of the water: possible from the NJ 800 upwards.
- The warranty: 2 years.
A pump for every flow rate, from nano tank to aquaponic system
The Newa Jet water pump, made in Italy, circulates the water of an aquarium, filter, fountain or aquaponic system. Its range has nine models, from 400 to 6,000 L/h, for a head height of 0.70 m to 3.60 m. Models from the NJ 800 upwards also work out of the water.
In an aquarium as in an aquaponic system, the pump circulates all the water: it pushes it from the fish tank to the filter or the grow beds, from where it flows back down by gravity, rich in oxygen. A pump that is too weak lets waste build up; a pump that is too powerful creates a current that tires the fish and wastes electricity. The Newa Jet range, designed and made in Italy, covers nine flow rates, from 400 to 6,000 litres per hour, so you can choose exactly the right model.
🔧 Submerged or out of the water
The two small models, the NJ 400 and NJ 600, can only be installed submerged, in at least 3 cm of water. From the NJ 800 upwards, the pump can also run out of the water, in-line on a circuit: this is handy under an aquarium cabinet, in a settling chamber or beside an aquaponic tank, when you would rather keep the pump within easy reach. It works in freshwater and seawater alike, up to 35 °C, and must never run dry.
The stated flow rate is that of the pump at zero metres of head. It decreases as the head height increases: at the maximum height, which ranges from 0.70 m for the NJ 400 to 3.60 m for the NJ 6000, it drops to zero. From the NJ 400 to the NJ 3000, a dial adjusts the flow rate, which lets you adapt the current after installation. The NJ 4500 and NJ 6000 have no adjustment, but they have electronics that stop the pump if the water runs low or the rotor jams, then try to restart it.
NJ 400 to NJ 1200
These four models deliver 400 to 1,200 L/h for 7 to 15 W.
NJ 1700 to NJ 3000
These three models deliver 1,700 to 3,000 L/h for 33 to 55 W.
NJ 4500 and NJ 6000
The two largest models are for large volumes and ponds.
Flow rate adjustment
A dial adjusts the flow of each model up to the NJ 3000.
📏 Choosing the right model
The usual rule in aquaponics is to pass the entire volume of the fish tank through the circuit at least once an hour. Take a 1,000-litre tank whose water must be pumped up 1.20 m to a grow bed. An NJ 1200 would be too marginal, as its maximum head is only 1.45 m; the NJ 2300, whose maximum head reaches 2.40 m, still delivers around 1,150 L/h at 1.20 m. For a 200-litre aquarium, an NJ 800 or an NJ 1200 is more than enough. As the pump runs day and night, its power rating matters too: a 55 W model uses around 480 kWh a year, against 130 kWh for a 15 W model, so it is in your interest to choose the flow rate you need rather than the strongest.
A timer for the flood-and-drain beds
A flood-and-drain grow bed fills and empties in regular cycles, and this rhythm depends on when the pump is switched on. The mechanical daily timer fits between the socket and the Newa Jet, and you set the periods during which it runs to within a quarter of an hour. The fill and drain cycles then repeat identically every day, with no intervention from you.
Each pump is supplied with its suction cups for fixing, an intake grille and the outlet fittings suited to its size: 13 mm outlet on the NJ 400 and 600, 1/2" thread on the NJ 800 and 1200, 3/4" thread with 21 and 27 mm fittings on the NJ 1700 to 3000, 25 and 32 mm fittings on the NJ 4500 and 6000. These last two models rest on a four-suction-cup stand, with a foam pre-filter and an adjustable impeller chamber. The warranty is 2 years.
Maintenance comes down to regular cleaning. Every 4 to 6 weeks, unplug the pump, remove the intake grille and rinse it, then take out the impeller and clean it in water from the aquarium or pond, without detergent. A deposit of limescale or sludge on the impeller shaft reduces the flow rate and makes the pump noisier, and regular cleaning extends the life of the pump. Position the intake a few centimetres above the bottom, on a stable support, so that it does not draw in sludge or small fish. Out of the water, fit a valve on the intake and on the outlet so that you can remove the pump without draining the circuit.
🌱 In aquaponics
In an aquaponic system, the Newa Jet feeds the grow beds, gutters or towers from the fish tank. Paired with a timer, it can also set the rhythm of the fill and drain cycles of a flood-and-drain bed. The guide to building your own aquaponic system shows where to place the pump in the circuit, and the one on the nitrogen cycle explains why the water must circulate continuously between the fish, the bacteria and the plants.
