The summary

  • Principle: a light peat-free potting compost, in a 50 L bag, made from renewable materials.
  • Ingredients: coco fibre, wood fibre, composted bark, miscanthus and perlite.
  • Nutrition: light fertilisation, so you keep control over the fertiliser you add.
  • Uses: seedlings, young plants, cuttings and pot cultivation, including the hungriest crops.
  • Fish circuit: for the pots and nursery around the system, never in a grow bed.
  • After the crop: it can be reused, with the roots removed, with or without fresh compost.

Light potting compost made from renewable fibres, for growing without peat

BioBizz's Light-Mix Peat Free is a light peat-free potting compost, based on coco fibre, wood, composted bark, miscanthus and perlite. Lightly fertilised, it is fed through watering with Bio-Grow and then Bio-Bloom, and can be reused. Its fibres would break down in an aquaponic grow bed: it is reserved for pots.

Peat takes several thousand years to form in wetlands, and its extraction destroys habitats that store large amounts of carbon. BioBizz Light-Mix Peat Free does away with it entirely. Its ingredients, all renewable, have been chosen to reproduce what peat brings to a potting compost: lightness, aeration and water retention. You therefore keep a supple mix that is easy to work with, without drawing on a resource that cannot be replenished within a lifetime.

🌾 Fibres rather than peat

Coco fibre

Made from the husk of the coconut, it retains water and gives the mix its softness.

Wood fibre

It lightens the compost and leaves air between the finer particles.

Composted bark

Coarser, it gives the mix structure and limits compaction over successive waterings.

Miscanthus and perlite

Miscanthus fibre and perlite grains complete the aeration and drainage.

The mix is lightly fertilised, which leaves you to decide most of the nutrition. On contact with water, the organic matter it contains encourages rapid root development, and the roots find both air and water in this grow medium. You can then apply generous doses of fertiliser to all plants, including the hungriest ones such as tomatoes or squashes, without overloading the compost. Bio-Grow is added to the watering, at 2 to 4 ml per litre according to the peat-free growing programme, and then Bio-Bloom joins it when the flowers appear.

🐟 Pots and pond nursery

An aquaponic grow bed is filled with clay pebbles or gravel, because the fish water must circulate through it without carrying away particles and because these materials also serve as a support for the filter bacteria. Potting compost, even peat-free, has no place there: its fine fibres and bark break down in flowing water, cloud the circuit and end up in the pump. Light-Mix Peat Free is therefore used around the system, in pots, planters and raised beds in the greenhouse, and in the nursery where you raise the plants destined for the vegetable garden.

Starting aquaponic plants in rockwool cubes

For plants that will go into the grow bed or onto the raft, rockwool cubes are a better choice than compost: the root plug can be placed as it is in a basket or in the clay pebbles, without releasing fibres into the water. Keep the Light-Mix Peat Free for seedlings destined for pots and the garden, and each plant then goes off in the medium that suits its destination.

Set the automatic watering to the drainage

With drip irrigation or a water reservoir, the water must be able to soak fully into the compost and then drain away. A grow medium that stays waterlogged encourages mould: adjust the watering time and check the moisture with your finger during the first few weeks. Keep the bag out of the reach of children, as the compost must not be swallowed.

If a seedling raised in potting compost must nevertheless go into an aquaponic system, carefully remove the root ball and rinse the roots in clean water until no particles remain, then place it in a basket filled with clay pebbles. Transplanting is best done at least two weeks after the first true leaves appear, when the roots can cope with handling. Plants that will stay in pots beside the pond, such as herbs, strawberries or patio tomatoes, on the other hand benefit fully from this airy compost, fed through watering.

♻️ Reusing the compost

At the end of a crop, the potting mix doesn't have to go to the compost heap. Remove the roots of the previous plant, then replant straight away or blend in about 30% fresh, light potting mix to refresh the structure. Reusing it extends the life of the bag and reduces the volume of grow medium you have to buy each season. To compare this mix with other media, from pure coconut fibre to clay pebbles, the article on choosing a grow medium sets it all out, and a liquid pH test kit helps you check your watering water.

Its light feeding makes it a good starter compost for seedlings, young plants and cuttings, whose still-fine roots cope poorly with an overly rich grow medium. As the plant grows, you increase the liquid fertiliser rather than changing the compost. Keep an eye on the leaf tips: yellowing with dry, brittle ends signals too much fertiliser, which you correct by spacing out the feeds or reducing the dose.

📦 The 50-litre bag

The 50-litre bag weighs about 12 kg and fills around ten 5-litre pots or two large balcony troughs. The mix is certified as an input for organic farming by Soil Association and by Control Union, under the European regulation and the American NOP programme. Close the opened bag again and store it out of the rain, so that the compost stays evenly moist until the next repotting.
