🌬️ Air diffuser hose: continuous oxygenation over a large area
The air diffuser hose is designed to release oxygen along its entire length rather than at a single point like an air stone. Lay it on the bottom of a tank, along a row of buckets or coiled in a buffer reservoir, connect it to an air pump, and the whole covered area is oxygenated at once.
This equipment replaces or complements a battery of air stones on large setups. It makes maintenance easier (one hose to clean instead of 10 stones) and improves oxygenation uniformity in long, narrow volumes.
📊 Technical specifications
- Length: 5 metres per roll
- Diameter: 16 mm (outer) or 20 mm
- Material: microporous rubber resistant to nutrients
- Fitting: 4 mm barbed at both ends
- Recommended air flow: 150 to 250 L/h per metre
- Country of origin: Italy
🎯 16 mm or 20 mm: which to choose
The 16 mm suits most hobby and semi-pro uses: rows of RDWC buckets, 100 to 300 L tanks, buffer reservoirs. The 20 mm has a higher air flow, recommended for tanks over 500 L, aquaponic setups with fish, or runs longer than 3 metres in a single stretch.
You can also mix: a 16 mm section for the grow, a 20 mm section for the tank. Hailea ACO 9620 air pumps or similar comfortably feed both diameters.
🔧 Installation and maintenance
Cut to length with a utility knife, the hose connects directly to the air pump outlet. For runs longer than 3 metres in a single stretch, preferably feed from both ends to even out internal pressure and avoid uneven diffusion.
Maintenance comes down to a monthly soak in distilled water with 1% citric acid. This unclogs the pores and restores fine bubbles. Without maintenance, clogging gradually reduces the air flow.
💡 Pro tips: typical configurations
Three recurring uses that get the best out of this product:
- Aquaponic tank: a 3 to 5 m coil covers a 500 L tank.
- NFT line: a 1 m section per channel to boost oxygenation.
- RDWC buffer reservoir: a 1.5 m ring at the bottom for continuous stirring.
