The summary

  • Its composition: a liquid single-nutrient fertiliser with 20% K2O, in organic form and chlorine-free.
  • The doses: 10 ml per 10 L as a supplement, up to 20 ml per 10 L for a deficiency.
  • A precaution: never mixed neat with a calcium or magnesium product.
  • Use in aquaponics: in a decoupled loop or in neighbouring hydroponics, never in the fish water.

A single element, potassium, to correct a deficiency without changing everything

CANNA Mono Potassium is a liquid supplement with 20% K2O, free of chlorine, which corrects a potassium deficiency. It is added to the base fertiliser, at 10 to 20 ml per 10 litres, never undiluted with a calcium product; PK 13/14 supplies phosphorus and potassium together. In aquaponics, it never goes into the fish water.

Potassium regulates the movement of water in the plant, the opening of the stomata in its leaves and the filling of its fruit with sugars. When it is lacking, the edges of the oldest leaves turn yellow and then brown, as if scorched, and the fruit stays small, colours poorly and lacks flavour. CANNA Mono Potassium supplies this element on its own, in liquid form, so that you can correct a deficiency or support fruiting without altering the rest of your nutrient solution.

🧪 Potassium on its own, chlorine-free

The product is rated at 20% K2O, the form in which the potassium of a fertiliser is expressed, in an organic form and chlorine-free. It belongs to the CANNA range of single-nutrient products, highly soluble liquid minerals that the plant absorbs directly, made from the same raw materials as the base fertilisers and compatible with them. These single-nutrient products serve two purposes: making up a specific deficiency, and boosting an element at the moment the crop uses the most of it, which for potassium is fruiting. When phosphorus needs to follow at the same time, in full flower, PK 13/14 supplies both elements together.

Support

10 ml per 10 litres, or 1/1000, during fruiting.

Correction

Up to 20 ml per 10 litres, i.e. 1/500, for a visible deficiency.

Order

Base fertiliser, mixing, Mono Potassium, then EC check.

Monitoring

The new leaves show the effect; the older ones stay marked.

The absence of chlorine matters above all in a recycled solution or a grow medium that is little flushed, where the chloride supplied by another source of potassium would build up from one application to the next. Potassium also competes with calcium and magnesium: an overdose of Mono Potassium causes calcium and magnesium deficiencies and acidifies the root zone. This is why the correction is always made on an already balanced solution, in small doses, and never as a replacement for your complete fertiliser.

Pour the potassium in separately from the calcium and magnesium

Being concentrated, Mono Potassium must never be mixed with a product based on calcium or magnesium, such as a CalMag or Epsom salt. Pour each product into the water separately, stirring between additions. Keep the bottle closed, away from frost, heat and light, and out of the reach of children.

Measure the potassium before correcting it

Scorched edges on older leaves can also come from an excess of salts or irregular watering. A potassium test shows you the real level in your solution or in your system's water before any correction. You then dose Mono Potassium only for a confirmed shortfall, and check after a few days that the level has indeed risen.

First prepare your usual solution with the base fertiliser, stir, then add Mono Potassium at the chosen dose and stir again. The conductivity rises slightly after the addition: measure it, then adjust the pH last. For a first correction, stay at 10 ml per 10 litres and watch the leaves that form over the following week, as those already marked will not turn green again. It can be used equally well in hydroponics, on coir or in soil, with the fertiliser suited to each of these growing media.

🐟 Potassium and the fish circuit

In an aquaponic system, potassium is a limiting element: fish feed supplies too little of it to meet the needs of fruiting vegetables, so it has to be topped up. Fish-safe corrections use simple forms, such as potassium bicarbonate or potash, which management guides alternate with hydrated lime to raise the pH towards 7 while supplying potassium and calcium. The Aquaponic Mix fertiliser, formulated for water that houses fish, is another source. The article on deficiencies in aquaponics helps you recognise a shortage from the leaf.

That said, Mono Potassium should not be poured into the tank or into a bed connected to the circuit: it is dosed for a solution without fish. It does, however, have its place in decoupled aquaponics, where the fish water feeds a separate growing loop that never returns to the pond, and where the plant solution is corrected element by element. You can also use it in an independent hydroponic tank or on fruiting vegetables grown in pots alongside the system.

🍅 The hungriest crops

Fruiting vegetables account for the largest share of demand. On the tomato, potassium supports the colour and flavour of the fruit, and the need peaks during the harvest; strawberries and peppers, which keep swelling their fruit without interruption, follow the rhythm of picking; cucumbers and courgettes produce a lot in a short time and quickly exhaust a solution calibrated to the bare minimum. Lettuces and herbs, harvested for their leaves, need far less and can generally do without this supplement.

With these crops, the balance with calcium deserves particular attention. Blossom end rot in tomatoes, a dry brown patch at the tip of the fruit, signals a calcium deficiency, and an excess of potassium is precisely what slows calcium uptake. It is therefore better to correct in stages, checking the level after each addition, rather than aiming straight for the high dose.

📦 Bottle and storage

Depending on the dose chosen, a one-litre bottle is enough for 500 to 1,000 litres of solution. For a 50-litre sump tank, allow 50 to 100 ml per preparation, which means between 10 and 20 complete preparations from a single bottle. As the product is used occasionally, for a correction or during fruiting, it generally lasts several seasons for a family vegetable garden or a domestic hydroponic system. Measure each dose with a dosing cup kept for this purpose and rinsed after use, so that the concentrated potassium never comes into contact with a calcium supplement.
