Annual pack of sawdust and compost activator
Boost decomposition, achieve balanced compost and say goodbye to bad odors.
The summary
- What you receive: two bags of coarse sawdust and two bags of activator, with or without worms.
- Which composters it suits: the indoor worm composter, the burial worm composter, and the kitchen garden composter.
- How often: a handful of sawdust with each addition, the activator when the composter is full.
- With or without worms: with worms for an empty composter, without for an already established colony.
Thick sawdust and compost activator for a full year, with or without worms.
A year of worm composting comes down to three consumables, which this accessory pack brings together: coarse wood shavings to balance each addition, activator to restart decomposition when the composter is full, and in its complete version a batch of worms to get started. It is designed for use with the indoor terracotta worm composter, the in-ground worm composter and the balcony kitchen garden composter.
🪵 Two sachets, two roles
The two bags are not used at the same time. The coarse wood shavings accompany every addition: a handful over fresh peelings provides the carbon they lack, absorbs their moisture and aerates the compost, which prevents odours and keeps fungus gnats at bay. The activator, on the other hand, is only used occasionally, when the composter is full and you want to free up space more quickly. The batch of worms, finally, is only needed when starting a new composter, hence the two versions of the pack.
Coarse sawdust
Made from untreated hardwood, it balances the moisture content of peelings.
The activator
It combines non-pathogenic, non-GMO micro-organisms with mineral carriers and organic salts.
The worm batch
In the version with worms, it delivers adults, juveniles, and eggs, along with the soil microfauna.
A first pot to bury with the full version
If you are just starting out, the terracotta in-ground worm composter paired with the version with worms makes a ready-to-go set. You bury it in a planter or in the kitchen garden, settle the worms in, and the sawdust in the pack covers deposits for the entire first year. The smaller 2 L size is enough for a single planter; the larger sizes handle the peelings from a whole kitchen.
Keep the worms in damp fabric until installation
If you cannot introduce the worms on the day of delivery, keep the cloth containing them moist and store them somewhere dark, away from light and heat. Add them as soon as you start up your composter.
The activator is used once the composter is full. It speeds up decomposition by around 30% over one month, reducing the volume so you can start adding waste again; when the worm colony already occupies the entire composter, it shortens the cycle to around 2 months instead of 3. A 10 g sachet is calculated for 1 m³ of organic waste, far more than a domestic composter holds, and the instructions included with the sachet give the correct dose for your composter's size: you will therefore only use a small fraction each time.
The two versions of the pack differ only in the worm supply, and it is the state of your composter that tells you whether you need it. A brand-new, empty composter, or one placed above ground with no contact with garden soil, needs worms to get started; without them, decomposition remains purely bacterial and takes around twelve months. If you already have an established colony, a handful of its worms transferred across is enough to kick-start a new composter, and the version without worms will suit you perfectly.
🪱 The version with worms
The worms belong to the genus Eisenia and are of French origin. They travel in approximately 500 g of compost, which serves as food during transit, and the batch is dispatched around one week after your order. On opening, simply tip the contents of the cloth onto the surface of your composter and allow the worms to burrow down on their own. Allow around 6 months before the first compost is ready, as the colony needs time to multiply, then 3 months once it has spread throughout the full space.
📅 A year's worth of deposits
Day to day, the pack comes down to one action: a handful of sawdust after each addition of peelings. The composter compacts continuously, it takes roughly 20 kg of peelings to produce 1 kg of compost, yet it eventually fills up; that is the moment to add the activator according to the instructions enclosed with the sachet. The compost is ready when you can barely find any worms in it. If the sawdust runs out before the year is up, dead leaves are an excellent substitute, whereas corrugated cardboard should be avoided, as its glue passes into the compost.
📦 The parcel of the year
The package contains two 400 g bags of coarse wood shavings and two 10 g bags of activator, plus a batch of worms in the version that includes them. The activator is manufactured in France by a partner laboratory, and the wood shavings come from an Alsatian woodturning workshop. To set up a planter or small space from scratch, the starter kit combines a planter composter, an olla, and a slug trap, and this pack then takes over for the rest of the year.
