Two-part fertiliser for growing in coco fibre
CANNA Coco A+B is a two-part mineral fertiliser formulated for coco fibre, a grow medium that retains some elements and releases others. A single formula covers both growth and flowering, at 40 ml of A and 40 ml of B per 10 litres of water.
The summary
- What it is: a liquid mineral fertiliser in two bottles, formulated for the exchanges specific to coco fibre.
- What dose: 40 ml of A then 40 ml of B per 10 litres of water, a dilution of 1/250.
- How many formulas: just one, from growth to harvest, with no change of bottle at flowering.
- The benchmarks: a conductivity of 1.2 to 2.3 mS/cm and a pH of 5.5 to 6.2 for the solution.
- With a pond: only on a run-to-waste coco fibre crop, managed separately, never in the fish water.
- What for: tomatoes, peppers, cucumbers and strawberries in pots or coco slabs.
A single formula, from growth to harvest, on coco fibre
CANNA Coco A+B is a two-part mineral fertiliser for tomatoes, peppers, cucumbers and strawberries grown in coco fibre, from growth through to harvest. Use 40 ml of A followed by 40 ml of B per 10 litres. Kits from 2 x 1 L to 2 x 10 L. It must never be poured into the fish water.
Coco fibre is a light, airy grow medium that holds water well, widely used for tomatoes, cucumbers or strawberries grown without soil. It nonetheless behaves in a particular way: being entirely organic, it has a high exchange capacity, meaning that it binds certain nutrients to its fibres and releases others into the irrigation water. A universal fertiliser becomes unbalanced in it over the weeks, whereas CANNA Coco A+B is formulated to take this behaviour into account and keep your plants properly fed from transplanting to harvest.
🥥 A formula tailored to the grow medium
Coco coir naturally contains a lot of potassium, so the fertiliser that goes with it should supply little of it and instead provide more calcium and phosphate. Yet these two elements, brought together at high concentration in the same bottle, react with each other and form a deposit that the plant can no longer absorb. That is why you receive two bottles: A and B make up a single fertiliser, but they only meet once diluted in water. The formula combines minerals, natural chelates and humic and fulvic acids, and it is used unchanged through both growth and flowering, because the grow medium itself cushions the transition.
Dose
You pour 40 ml of A then 40 ml of B into 10 litres of water, which gives a 1/250 dilution.
Conductivity
The ready-to-use solution measures 1.2 to 2.3 mS/cm, tap water included.
pH
The feeding solution is adjusted to between 5.5 and 6.2 before each application.
Check the pH of the solution before watering
On coconut fibre, the watering solution should stay between 5.5 and 6.2, and limy tap water often pushes it above that. An AMTRA electronic pH tester gives the value in a few seconds, with automatic temperature compensation. If the reading exceeds 6.2, a few drops of pH- corrector bring it back into range, and you avoid the iron and phosphorus lockouts that appear when the pH stays too high.
Pour in A then B, never the concentrates together
Shake the bottles, fill the sump tank with water, pour in A and stir, then pour in B and stir again. Then leave the solution to stand for a few hours before watering. Never mix A and B undiluted, in a measuring cup for example, as the calcium and phosphate will clump together immediately. Rinse the measuring cup between the two parts.
🐟 Coco A+B and decoupled systems
In a coupled aquaponic system, the fish water circulates in a loop between the pond, the biological filter and the plants. CANNA Coco A+B is formulated for an irrigated coco grow medium, not for this water shared with fish and nitrifying bacteria, so you should not pour it into the pond, the grow bed or a raft. A solution at 1.2 to 2.3 mS/cm would also supply the plants' entire nutrition, whereas the water of a well-managed pond already contains a large share of it in the form of nitrates. The real deficiencies in an aquaponic circuit mostly concern iron, potassium and calcium, and they are corrected with fish-safe products, such as a DTPA chelated iron applied at about 2 mg/L every three weeks.
The fertiliser does, however, have its place in a decoupled system, where the pond water feeds a separate crop without ever returning to the fish. Coco blocks irrigated by drip irrigation with run-to-waste are the simplest example: the fish water serves as the base, and a fraction of the dose of Coco A+B tops up what it already provides. In this case, you adjust the feed to the measured conductivity rather than to the full dose, starting from the pond water and adding the fertiliser until you reach the target range. For seedlings destined for the coupled circuit, rockwool cubes rinsed in clean water remain preferable to a coco plug fed with fertiliser.
💧 Watering on coco fibre
Water until it begins to drain from the bottom of the pot, once a day for the first few weeks, then up to twice a day on mature plants, at a rate of 4 to 6 litres per square metre per day. If you are growing in small pots, the root volume dries out faster and needs more frequent watering, whereas a large coco block holds moisture for longer. Letting the grow medium dry out slightly between feeds improves root aeration and limits the risk of rot. The fertiliser is suitable for hand watering, run-to-waste drip irrigation and ebb-and-flow tables. During intensive growth, adjust your feeds so that 10 to 20% of the solution drains out of the bottom, which prevents salt build-up. If you add PK 13/14 with very hard water, correct the pH with a pH down for growth rather than a pH down for flowering, to avoid a deposit that would block the drippers.
After three to four weeks, a check of the grow medium tells you whether the nutrition is still balanced. Squeeze a handful of coco into a little water and measure the liquid you collect: a conductivity of 1.1 to 1.3 mS/cm and a pH of 5.5 to 6.2 indicate a grow medium in good condition. When the conductivity is well above this range, salts have built up around the roots, and flushing with slightly acidified water at pH 5.8 clears them before you resume feeding at the usual dose.
📦 Choosing the capacity
Each kit contains one bottle of A and one bottle of B of the same volume. The 2 x 1 litre kit makes up 250 litres of solution, enough to feed a few large pots of tomatoes or strawberries for several weeks. The 2 x 5 and 2 x 10 litre kits are intended for a whole greenhouse or for drip irrigation over several rows, and make up 1,250 and 2,500 litres of solution respectively. Choose the size according to the volume you water each week, then store the bottles closed, away from light, which degrades the iron chelates, away from frost and out of the reach of children.
